BRUSSELS CAN'T OVERRULE US ` GOVERNMENT

The Government has insisted it cannot be overruled by the EU Commission if it allows a BA/American Airlines linkup. When the Board of Trade President rules on the matter it would not be "eligible to be overruled" by the Commission " a Downing Street spokesman said. EU Commissioner Karel Van Miert says the alliance would harm competition. But Downing St would not comment on his suggestion that the matter would go to the EU Court of Justice.

MIERT SLAMS BA CHIEF EXECUTIVE'S "LIES"

EU Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert has accused BA chief executive Bob Ayling of lying in a row over BA's plan to link up with American Airlines. Mr Miert told BBC Radio that contrary to Mr Ayling's claims deals by other airlines were also being investigated. "To say we are not looking at other airlines is absolutely a lie " he said. The European Commission threatened court action if the alliance went ahead as planned calling it anti-competitive

THOUSANDS GATHER IN PROTEST AT GUN BAN

Around 9 000 people have gathered in London to protest against Government plans to ban most types of handgun following last year's Dunblane killings People carried banners bearing slogans saying "we're not the guilty" and "unfair unethical & un-British". The protesters claim a ban would not prevent another massacre. After the rally in Trafalgar Square a petition containing 64 000 names was handed in to 10 Downing Street.

IT'S BUSINESS AS USUAL MAJOR INSISTS

John Major has indicated that he will soldier on despite being the head of a minority Government following the death of backbencher Iain Mills. A Downing Street spokesman said: "His view is that the Government will remain the Government. Business will carry on as he intends it should." Mr Major knew of the MP's death before he attended Question Time at the House. And he suggested that the Opposition should not expect an imminent election.

UNIONS BACK GOVERNMENT OVER HOMEWORK

Teaching unions have backed ministers against Labour as homework emerged as a major issue in the pre-election battle. They agreed with Government ministers who unveiled evidence linking homework and educational attainment but refused to set minimum requirements. Labour accused Tories of "complacency" and promised to set minimum guidelines. But Peter Smith of the Association of Teachers & Lecturers said schools needed advice not "government diktat".

GREEKS IN TALKS WITH SERBIA'S MILOSEVIC

Greek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos has met Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic in Belgrade. Although he did not speak about the talks Mr Pangalos said later that full recognition of opposition victories could resolve the country's crisis. But the opposition says Mr Milosevic has shown no sign of compromise. Meanwhile marches have continued in Serbia as protestors demand that the opposition wins be accepted.

CLINTON MAKES CEASEFIRE PLEA TO IRA

President Clinton has made a fresh appeal to the IRA to call an immediate ceasefire in both "words & deeds". He also urged loyalist gunmen to maintain their truce & "refrain from descending into a cycle of violence". Mr Clinton said he was "deeply outraged" by the ending of the IRA ceasefire 11 months ago. Meanwhile the IRA has said it carried out last night's mortar attack on a joint police & army patrol in Belfast
