RAIL FRANCHISE BOSS CONDEMNS INVESTMENT

Former rail franchising director Roger Salmon says passengers & British Rail have suffered because of a lack of Government investment in the industry. Mr Salmon who left his job two months ago told the BBC the minimum amount of cash was made available for railways. But the Government said his comments were "naive" & the railways were sold to bring improvement for passengers. Mr Salmon was in charge of the early stages of the rail sell-off.

IDEOLOGY BEHIND SOCIAL REFORM ` LABOUR

Labour has accused the Government of putting Tory ideology before national interests over plans to give private firms a bigger role in social services. A White Paper outlining proposals is due out next month the BBC reports. Health Minister Gerry Malone gave no detail but said it would be "ludicrous" not to explore extending privatisation. Partnerships between the private voluntary & state sectors were working well he told BBC radio.
