HISTORIAN ATTACKS NAZI-ULSTER AD PLANS

A leading historian has condemned Government plans for a TV advertising campaign linking persecution in Northern Ireland to Nazi Germany. The Government says there is a "valid comparison" between church burnings in Northern Ireland & pre-war Germany. But Andrew Roberts Winston Churchill's biographer claims the Government has lost a sense of proportion. The proposed campaign was "widely inappropriate" Mr Roberts added.

The Government has been harshly criticised by its own advisers for failing to coordinate & organise bus services across the country. An environmental transport working group says privatisation has fragmented the national bus network. No-one is accountable for shortcomings in the system & bus users are a neglected minority it adds. Travellers face delays high fares poor information & inconvenience.

TERRORISTS OUT TO KILL TROOPS SAYS RUC

The RUC says last night's rocket attack on an Army patrol in west Belfast shows terrorists are determined to kill members of the security forces. One rocket grenade hit the wheel of an Army Land Rover. The other hit the wall of a training centre. Staff inside escaped unhurt but some people were cut by flying glass & two elderly women were treated for shock. The attack in the Springfield Road area bore the hallmarks of the IRA.

TAXPAYERS "FORK OUT £5.5bn TOO MU

People will pay the Government nearly #5.5bn in tax they could have avoided according to a new report. Three out of four tax-payers could pay less ` on average they each waste £158 a year in unnecessary payments ` said financial advisers group IFA Promotion. And the problem would become worse when the new system of tax self-assessment becomes fully operational in April. "Paying the taxman more than necessary is effectively gifting your hard-earned cash to the Exchequer " said the report

NO MORE UNION LAWS NECESSARY SAYS CBI

The Government does not need to bring in more legislation to curb trade union activity the CBI says. The Confederation of British Industry has been considering Government proposals for new laws to outlaw strikes in public services. But it concluded that further legislation was not necessary. The new laws if they were to be introduced would be difficult to implement the CBI warned.

IMPERIAL ROLLS UP £185m RIZLA DEA

Imperial Tobacco has bought Rizla International ` the world's top maker of cigarette papers ` for £185m. The deal includes a purchase price of #168m & £17m of existing debt at the Dutch company. Rizla has production facilities across Europe including a site in south Wales. In 1996 it made a trading profit of £23m up 19% on sales of £74m. It will be managed as a separate division and the existing senior management will remain in place to provide continuity Imperial said.

LABOUR APPROVES RADICAL RESTRUCTURING

Labour officials have approved radical new plans to reshape party structures despite opposition from left-wingers. Tony Blair said the shake-up would prevent a small group of party activists wielding "disproportionate power" if Labour won the election. The party's ruling National Executive Committee voted 22-1 for the plans. Shadow Chancellor Gordon Brown earlier announced his resignation from the NEC at the party conference in October.
