MIERT SLAMS BA CHIEF EXECUTIVE'S "LIES"

EU Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert has accused BA chief executive Bob Ayling of lying in a row over BA's plan to link up with American Airlines. Mr Miert told BBC Radio that contrary to Mr Ayling's claims deals by other airlines were also being investigated. "To say we are not looking at other airlines is absolutely a lie " he said. The European Commission threatened court action if the alliance went ahead as planned calling it anti-competitive

TV APPEAL BOOSTS HUNT FOR NINE-YEAR-OLD

The hunt for missing schoolgirl Kayleigh Ward has been boosted by a BBC television appeal for help. Police said more than 70 telephone calls were being followed up after last night's Crimewatch UK programme. A spokesman said the information had given officers renewed hope of finding the missing nine-year-old alive. Kayleigh disappeared from the hostel where her family were living in Chester on December 19.

HOUSE PRICES RISES ` HOW THE UK DIVIDES

Greater London has had the strongest house price rises over the past few months followed by Wales & the West Midlands according to a new survey. Lowest rises were recorded in the North and East Midlands it adds. The Halifax Britain's biggest building society examined prices throughout Britain during the last quarter of 1996 and over the year as a whole. It has already disclosed that average UK prices are 8.4% higher than in 1995.

Mrs Horlick 35 heads the £18bn UK pensions fund business at the German- owned company. The move came four months after Morgan Grenfell sacked star unit trust manager Peter Young over trade irregularities. A spokesman said Mrs Horlick had been suspended pending an internal investigation relating to potential breaches of her contract

CHIEF EXECUTIVE QUITS NATIONAL EXPRESS

National Express has stunned the City with news that chief executive Ernest Patterson has resigned after just five months with the bus company. Shares responded to the announcement with a fall of 4p to 540p. Mr Patterson has been replaced by Phil White the director responsible for West Midlands Travel. In a trading update National Express said it was currently performing well "on all fronts" & was looking forward to 1997 with confidence.

JOBS Around 300 jobs are to be created in Northern Ireland following a £12.5m investment by clothing manufacturer Desmond & Sons. At least half the new jobs will be based in Londonderry. LOTTERY The Samaritans are to receive #500 000 from the National Lottery Charities Board to help fund the single national phone number 0345 90 90 90. CUTS Three hundred jobs are to be lost at the St Austell-based English China Clays company. The firm says it must save £12m to stay in business.

Ford workers are to hold mass meetings throughout the country to vote on whether to have strike action ballots in protest at planned job losses. HESELTINE DISMISSES NHS CRISIS CLAIMS

Deputy Prime Minister Michael Heseltine has dismissed claims that the NHS was facing its worst crisis for years. Standing in for Mr Major at question time he said £1.6bn of extra spending had recently been injected into the NHS The service had been safe in the hands of the Tories Mr Heseltine insisted. But Labour's Ann Taylor accused the Government of creating thousands of extra administrators while cutting the number of nurses drastically.

TORIES IN MINORITY AS MP MILLS DIES

The Government has been plunged into a minority following the death of backbench MP for Meriden Iain Mills. The Tories now have 322 MPs & the combined opposition 323. A by-election is also pending in Wirral South. An election must be held by May 22 but John Major may have to call a snap poll if he is defeated in Parliament. Mr Mills 56 had a 14 699-vote majority at the last election. He had been at the Commons since 1979.
