BRITONS REMANDED OVER HUGE DRUGS BUST

Seven Britons accused of a £100m international drugs plot have been remanded in custody by a Dutch court. The trial follows the seizure of £75m worth of cocaine stashed inside aluminium ingots & sent to Rotterdam from Venezuela. A follow-up swoop in Amsterdam last October netted 1 500 kilos of heroin 50 kilos of Ecstasy & guns hand grenades & false passports. The seven will stand trial in April.

But Peter Shore says it will be difficult for Labour to maintain unity. And he believes "scores" of candidates will make known their objections to EMU

OLD BAILEY BOMBER TO STAND AT ELECTION

Sinn Fein have said that the Old Bailey bomber Gerry Kelly & chief negotiator Martin McGuinness are to stand for the party at the General Election. Mr McGuinness is to stand in Mid-Ulster and Mr Kelly who was convicted for his part in the Old Bailey bombing will contest the North Belfast seat. Meanwhile Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams has accused the security forces of a campaign of harassment. He said he was stopped at a checkpoint.

MAJOR UNAWARE OF TORY PARTY SPLIT PLANS

The Prime Minister has said reports of a planned split by 40 pro-European Conservative MPs are "completely off- beam as far as I am aware". It had been suggested the division would happen if John Major lost the election & then the leadership of his party to right-winger Michael Portillo. Mr Major told reporters in Huntingdon there was nothing to justify the story. European Monetary Union was unlikely to go ahead as planned in 1999 he added.

EURO COIN DESIGN COMPETITION LAUNCHED

Britain is taking part in a competition to design coins for the European single currency being launched by European Union finance ministers. Treasury Minister Phillip Oppenheim is travelling to Brussels to help select a panel to choose a design. The UK is contributing despite the debate about whether it will take part and whether monetary union will happen. John Major has said EMU is "unlikely" to happen by its 1999 deadline.

BLAIR PUTS LABOUR ON ELECTION ALERT

Labour leader Tony Blair has put his party on a General Election footing with a warning that the Tories were "in a state of panic". Mr Blair told prospective Labour candidates that the Government was in such disarray "anything could happen". The Prime Minister was both "raring to go" & "wanting to wait until May 1" he said. But the country was tired of waiting added Mr Blair.

Labour leader Tony Blair is determined to hand power over to Brussels Tory party chairman Brian Mawhinney has said Answering Mr Blair's challenge to John Major to keep Euro-sceptics under control he said Mr Blair wanted to draw attention away from his plans. Mr Blair had not spelt out how he would tackle his own Euro-sceptics he said. But the "stunt" had backfired & drawn attention to Labour's own splits over Europe Dr Mawhinney added.
