CHURCHES IN CAMPAIGN OVER HOMELESSNESS

A campaign to draw attention to homelessness in the run-up to the General Election is beginning in churches across Britain. Today has been declared Homelessness Sunday & it will see the start of a lobby of parliamentary candidates by the Churches National Housing Coalition All would-be MPs will be asked a series of questions about housing issues. They include their views on ways to make more affordable homes available.

PM INSISTS GOVERNMENT DID NOT LOSE VOTE

The Prime Minister has insisted the Government was not defeated in the vote on grant-maintained schools last night. The "usual channels" were no doubt sorting out the position John Major told MPs at question time. The Government claimed there had been a miscount in the vote which the Government lost by just one vote. But Labour leader Tony Blair said a halt should be called to "the fag end of a burnt-out Government".

SPEAKER'S WARNING OVER SLEAZE CLAIMS

Commons Speaker Betty Boothroyd has criticised some sections of the media for "deplorable" comments about the cash-for-questions affair. She said there was a danger that individual allegations against MPs were being pre-judged. Her statement follows comments made last week by Labour MP Tam Dalyell arising from a Channel 4 documentary. The Speaker said the inquiry into sleaze could not be unduly hurried.

Passenger transport & airport operator National Express has been selected as the preferred bidder for North London Railways. Last week National Express was selected as the preferred bidder for Scottish bus company Taybus. And staying with rail franchises...... The Government has decided in principle to refer Stagecoach's proposed acquisition of ScotRail should the franchise be awarded to the transport group.

The Government will push ahead with its plan to allow successful schools to expand the Prime Minister has said. Mr Major told the Commons: "Our aim is to extend parental choice Labour's is to peddle double standards." Meanwhile ministers face another tricky vote on the Education Bill over moves to bring back caning in schools. Two Tory backbench amendments have been tabled in support of caning which ministers oppose.

EURO COIN DESIGN COMPETITION LAUNCHED

Britain is taking part in a competition to design coins for the European single currency being launched by European Union finance ministers. Treasury Minister Phillip Oppenheim is travelling to Brussels to help select a panel to choose a design. The UK is contributing despite the debate about whether it will take part and whether monetary union will happen. John Major has said EMU is "unlikely" to happen by its 1999 deadline.

Cardiff will host the June 1998 European summit when Britain holds the EU presidency John Major has confirmed Around 5 000 government officials & journalists are expected to converge on the Welsh capital bringing an expected #15m into the local economy. Welsh Secretary William Hague has welcomed the decision which was given in a Commons written answer. He said: "The sky's the limit for Cardiff."

NO GENERAL ELECTION UNTIL AFTER MAY 1

The Prime Minister has reaffirmed that the Government intends to continue in office until May l. Mr Major was speaking to Cabinet colleagues at a meeting at Chequers to discuss the Tory election manifesto. He said the campaign would build on the Tories' "opportunity revolution". It would set an agenda to extend choice and freedom "in a way we have never done before" & provide a programme for "lasting prosperity".

THREE BAILED IN SCHOOL MURDER BID PROBE

Three boys have been released on bail after being questioned about the attempted murder of a schoolboy. A fourth boy has already been bailed over Friday's attack. Police are still searching for a fifth youth. A gang of five boys lay in wait for the 14-year-old pupil as he left Kidbrooke secondary school in Eltham London. He was struck in the head by a machete- type knife & is still seriously ill in hospital. The motive is not clear.

TUESDAY'S PROCEEDINGS AT WESTMINSTER

Election fever boiled over as Labour Leader Tony Blair buoyed up by the Government defeat on the Education Bill told Mr Major to stop dithering and call a general election. The Prime Minister rejected his call saying Mr Blair clearly was not aware of the importance of legislation on crime & tougher sentences. Mr Major pledged to reverse the one` vote defeat but indicated it may not happen until after the election.
