LABOUR FILCHING TORY POLICIES ` MAJOR

The Prime Minister has accused Labour of "filching" Conservative policies. In a speech to business leaders in London he said the Labour Party was "acting like a jackdaw". Mr Major also branded Tony Blair's "Time For a Change" election slogan a "frivolous appeal". Running the country "isn't a game of cricket with one side batting & then the other side having a go" he told the meeting.

JUDGE HALTS WHITEMOOR JAIL-BREAK TRIAL

The trial of five IRA prisoners & an armed robber accused of breaking out of Whitemoor jail has been halted by a judge over claims of press prejudice. The defendants' right to a fair trial was said to have been damaged by an article in the London Evening Standard. The six accused of escaping from the Cambs jail in 1994 will not be retried The judge at Woolwich Crown Court told representatives of the newspaper to appear in court tomorrow.

FRENCH MINISTER ON WAR CRIMES CHARGE

A former French cabinet minister is to stand trial on war crimes charges the Supreme Court has ruled. Maurice Papon is accused of crimes against humanity for deporting 1 690 Jews from Nazi-occupied France. The Jews including 223 children were murdered in Nazi concentration camps. The case against Mr Papon emerged in the 1980s but President Mitterrand took a different view to offences under the Vichy regime than President Chirac.

MATCH-RIG WITNESS "TELLING RUBBISH"

The main prosecution witness in the trial of three footballers on match- fixing charges has been accused of telling lies & "rubbish". Chris Vincent admitted that he wanted to destroy his former friend Bruce Grobbelaar because he blamed him for the failure of a business scheme. Grobbelaar Hans Segers John Fashanu and a Malaysian deny the charges. The hearing at Winchester Crown Court is continuing.

APPEAL REVIEW AFTER WHITEMOOR JAIL CASE

Home Secretary Michael Howard says prosecutors may get the right to appeal against decisions to abandon trials. His comments come after the collapse of the Whitemoor jail-break case at Woolwich Crown Court in London. The trial of five IRA men & an armed robber ended yesterday after the judge said a report in the London Evening Standard prevented a fair hearing. Editor Max Hastings who offered a full apology could face a contempt charge.

McALISKEY LOSES FIGHT OVER EXTRADITION

Terrorist suspect Roisin McAliskey has lost a High Court bid to have a request for her extradition declared unlawful. Two judges rejected claims that the move was unlawful because Germany would not extradite its own nationals. Germany does not extradite its citizens but does try them if they are accused of crimes abroad a judge pointed out. Ms McAliskey is wanted in connection with an alleged IRA attack on British Army barracks in Osnabruck last year.

TRIPLE KILLER REFUSED LEAVE TO APPEAL

Steven Grieveson jailed for life for strangling three teenagers & burning their bodies has been refused leave to appeal against his conviction. Three Court of Appeal judges said they were satisfied his conviction was safe. The 25-year-old homosexual was convicted at Leeds in February 1996. The jury heard how he had sexually assaulted Thomas Kelly 18 and schoolboys David Hanson & David Grieff both 15 before killing them.

FORD EMPLOYEES FACING BALLOT ON STRIKE

Ford workers are to be balloted on strike action following the company's decision to axe 1 300 jobs. Unions announced the move after hundreds of workers including those from the affected plant at Halewood lobbied Ford officials in London. Ford is switching Escort production to Spanish & German factories. A TGWU spokesman said they would fight the firm's decision to "import foreign cars & export British jobs".

HINDLEY TO CHALLENGE SENTENCE RULING

Lawyers for Moors murderer Myra Hindley plan to challenge any ruling by the Home Secretary that she should spend the rest of her life in prison. The Home Office has refused to comment but the decision is expected to be confirmed to Hindley next week. Home Secretary Michael Howard is said to have ruled that the 56-year-old should never be released. Myra Hindley has spent 30 years in prison for the child killings.
