HOUSE BUILD FIGURES SPARK NEW OPT

The number of new houses being built is at its highest level for seven years according to Government figures. Housing starts soared 15% in the three months to November compared with the preceding quarter says the DoE. The 47 300 new starts was 29% higher than the corresponding period a year earlier although government & housing association starts remain low. BBC economics staff say it suggests builders believe the favourable market conditions will continue during 1997.

SECRETARY TO HEAD CHARLES ADVICE GROUP

Prince Charles' new private secretary will head a group which will at ways of convincing the public that the Prince of Wales should become the next king. Stephen Lamport will head a team of senior Royal Family advisers. Prince's Trust director Tom Shebbeare told BBC Radio that Prince Charles was "insufficiently understood." But Buckingham Palace is said to be anxious to avoid suggestions that it is planning a "relaunch" for the Prince.

SEA EMPRESS DISASTER REPORT CRITICAL

The draft report into the Sea Empress oil tanker disaster will reveal a catalogue of avoidable failures the BBC has learned. It is expected to say communications failed & charts for the area of the UK's biggest oil port were unreliable. The 147 000-tonne tanker ran aground outside Milford Haven last February. Over 70 000 tons of oil poured into the sea devastating wildlife & causing widespread damage to beaches.

FOOD PLANT CLOSURE WILL COST 500 JOBS

Over 500 jobs are to be shed with the closure of a big food processing plant. The complex at Coatbridge Strathclyde is being shut down in April as part of a "major restructuring" of its business the Marshall food group said. Changes include expanding two other plants in Scotland & one in Wales. Marshalls one of Britain's biggest chicken producing firms said the 22- year-old Coatbridge plant had suffered "massive" losses in recent years.
