TEENAGERS REMANDED ON MURDER BID CHARGE

Two teenage girls have been remanded on bail charged with the attempted murder of a 14-year-old. They were remanded into Social Services care until they appear again before Birmingham Magistrates on December 19. The victim was treated in hospital for cuts to her wrist after the incident in the Nechells area of the city. She was found by a security guard at Aston University science park after reportedly being held for nine hours.

"HIGH ALERT" AMID FEARS OF IRA BOMBINGS

Security forces are on high alert amid fears of a new IRA bombing campaign according to The Independent newspaper. Vigilance is said to have been stepped up in the City of London at Canary Wharf & at all military installations Senior politicians have been warned that they could be assassination targets says the report. Security has also been tightened reportedly in places such as Aldegrove Airport in Northern Ireland.

PSYCHIATRIC SURVEY OF REMAND PRISONERS

A study has revealed widespread mental illness among male remand prisoners. A survey of 13 adult men's prisons & three young offenders' institutions in England & Wales found psychiatric disorders in 63% of remand inmates. Substance abuse accounted for 38% of disorders found in the study published in the British Medical Journal. The authors from the London Institute of Psychiatry estimate that 9% of the men in the study should be in hospital.

PATIENT AWAKE DURING OPERATION MAY SUE

A woman from Nottinghamshire who came round during a painful operation is threatening legal action against the hospital where she was treated. Christine Crapper woke up while she was having her gall stones removed at Kings Mill Hospital near Mansfield. The hospital has apologised & offered her £2 000 in compensation - an offer she has rejected as "an insult". The hospital said the mishap was an "isolated incident".

A Bill to ban the sale & advertising of combat knives won all- party backing in the Commons when it was given an unopposed second reading. Introducing his measure Labour's Jimmy Wray acknowledged it was inspired by the stabbing to death of London headmaster Philip Lawrence last year. Mr Wray MP for Glasgow Provan told MPs: "I want young people to be heroes and give up their knives & stop the senseless murders & stabbings."

DUNBLANE PARENTS DROP XMAS TREE PLAN

The parents of victims of the Dunblane tragedy have dropped plans to erect a Christmas tree in the town's cemetery. Some people in the town had complained that the tree would be inappropriate. The bereaved parents said it had been intended as a symbol of peace & hope and a way of helping families through the Christmas period. But they said they were dropping the plan to avoid any further argument in the town.
