NO EURO AGREEMENT BEFORE JUNE ` CLARKE

Chancellor Kenneth Clarke has told MPs he does not expect any binding decision on the single currency before June 1997 He said ministers at yesterday's Ecofin talks had decided "nothing was agreed until everything was agreed". And Mr Clarke said he had made clear that his agreement would be subject to British parliamentary discussion. Earlier John Major said reports he would rule out a single currency were "fiction worthy of the Booker prize".

ANGLO-FRENCH TALKS OVER FISHING DISPUTE

French & British officials are in talks to try to resolve the dispute over Channel Island fishing waters. Bad weather has prevented French fishermen from entering the contentious Sark & Haricot Boxes for a second day A Guernsey Sea Fisheries spokesman said fishing in the Boxes would not be monitored because of the weather. French fishermen are angry at the ending of a two-year informal agreement allowing them to fish there.

AT WESTMINSTER THIS WEEK ` WED/THURS

BUDGET Shadow Chancellor Gordon Brown accused the Conservatives of systematic deception over taxes. He said the overall burden on taxpayers had risen. NORTHERN IRELAND PEACE PLANS Prime Minister John Major rejected proposals from SDLP leader John Hume and Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams aimed at bringing about an IRA truce. "We cannot & will not change policy to bargain for a ceasefire " he said.

REDWOOD TELLS PM TO MAKE UP MIND ON EMU

Leading Tory Euro-sceptic John Redwood says the Prime Minister must abandon his wait-and-see policy on a single European currency. He urged John Major to declare that Britain would not sign up to the first wave of monetary union in 1999. Mr Redwood told Radio 4 the PM would have the support of the overwhelming majority of his Cabinet if he did. Deputy Prime Minister Michael Heseltine has said there will be no such move.

AGREEMENT ON ZAIRE RELIEF AID ANNOUNCED

The setting-up of a multinational force to help displaced Rwandans in central Africa has been formally announced. The go-ahead was confimed by Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy to the country's parliament. Twenty countries are offering to take part although it is now expected to involve only about 2 000 troops ` a fifth of what was envisaged originally. The Canadians who will lead the force say it could be despatched at any time.

MAJOR IN TV BID TO BOLSTER AILING PARTY

John Major is appearing on television tomorrow in an attempt to bolster his party after the loss of his overall parliamentary majority. Backbench Tory Sir John Gorst withdrew his cooperation from the Government over the closure of full casualty services at Edgware General Hospital. He did not resign the whip but said the Tories could not rely on his vote. Mr Major will be appearing on BBC1's On the Record programme at 12.30pm.
