ASHDOWN SCORNS MAJOR'S CALL FOR UNITY

John Major has "given up" on the Euro- sceptic wing within the Conservative party Paddy Ashdown has said. "It now remains to be seen whether they have given up on him " the Liberal Democrat leader added. Mr Ashdown told the BBC Mr Major's call for unity yesterday was "one of his periodic attempts to lead his party". But the "virus of the Tory civil war was unstoppable" & Mr Major could govern neither Britain nor the Tories.

PLAN TO TACKLE TV VIOLENCE ANNOUNCED

National Heritage Secretary Virginia Bottomley has agreed an action plan to tackle public concern about TV violence It was agreed at a meeting between Mrs Bottomley & the chairmen of the BBC Independent Television Commission & Broadcasting Standards Council. The BSC will stage a seminar next year for broadcasters to discuss TV violence And there will be action to ensure proper standards & improve viewers' information about programmes.

RUSSIAN MINISTER HINTS AT NATO DIALOGUE

Russian Foreign Minister Yevgeny Primakov has hinted he wants to begin a dialogue which would lead to a new understanding with Nato. Speaking after a meeting with his Nato counterparts in Brussels he said there had been an offer to hold further talks on matters of concern to Russia. But he reiterated Russia's opposition to the alliance's expansion eastwards. A BBC correspondent says Russia accepts it must begin a dialogue with Nato.

BBA IN £113m AIRMOTIVE TAKEOVER

BBA Group is to spend £112.8m & take on £63.4m of debt to buy US-based International Airmotive. IA has two arms ` Dallas Airmotive one of the world's largest turbine engine overhaulers and distributor International Turbine Services. In the nine months to December last year IA made profits of £3m on sales of £91.6m. Net assets in August 1996 were £16.4m. The deal should enhance earnings in its first full year before any shake-up.

LOTTERY CASH TO HELP MEDICAL RESEARCH

The first major National Lottery grants to charities specialising in medical research have been announced. More than 40 are to share nearly £7m following complaints that such organisations had originally been excluded from applying. Among the beneficiaries is the Cardiff- based cancer charity Tenovus. Tenovus was forced to abandon its own fund raising scratchcards because of competition from the National Lottery.
