He was speaking at the funerals of an Israeli mother & son who were shot near the West Bank town of Ramallah. ISRAELI MAN OPENS FIRE ON PALESTINIANS

An Israeli man has opened fire on a group of Palestinian workers killing one & wounding four in a town south of Tel Aviv. A senior Palestinian security official said the unidentified man opened fire on the workers in Kiryat Gat. The dead man has been identified as Samir Abu Shafta. The attack came a day after suspected Palestinian radicals killed two Jewish settlers near the town of Ramallah.

£300m FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN WALES

The Government is making £300m available for economic development in Wales in the next financial year Welsh Secretary William Hague has announced. Mr Hague said the money represented "a huge investment in the economic future of Wales". However Shadow Welsh Secretary Ron Davies claimed the Welsh Office was facing a 9% real terms budget cut. He said the Government was failing to plan for the future of Wales.

PALESTINIANS GUILTY OF JEWISH BOMB PLOT

Two Palestinian terrorists have been convicted at the Old Bailey of plotting to bomb Jewish targets in London. Jawad Botmeh & Samar Alami will be sentenced on Monday. A third man Mahmoud Abu-Wardeh was ordered to be released by the judge after he was cleared of all charges. Bombs planted at the Israeli embassy in central London & at a Jewish welfare centre in north London caused extensive damage but no loss of life.

COMMITTEE SET UP OVER FOOD POISONING

Downing Street has confirmed that a new Cabinet sub-committee has been set up to examine the implications of the outbreak of E-coli food poisoning. It will include the Scottish Health and Agriculture Secretaries. Eleven people have died of the bug in Scotland The panel is likely to examine food hygiene rules & recent changes. It will also consider reports from the expert group chaired by Hugh Pennington and the fatal accident inquiry.

Labour Deputy Leader John Prescott has accused the Government of making dishonest claims about its tax record. Referring to yesterday's report on the Willett's affair he said future Tory tax promises should be made on oath. "The Tories have lost the trust of the nation " Mr Prescott said standing in for Tony Blair at Question Time. £14m CAR PARTS PLANT TO CREATE 120 JOBS

A German car parts company is to invest £14m in a new UK plant creating 120 jobs it has been announced. Benteler is building a facility for structural body & chassis assemblies at Corby Northants which will start production in mid-1997. The deal could lead to a further 180 jobs being created. Until now Benteler had supplied UK customers including Ford Jaguar Rover & Toyota from factories on the Continent.

The BBC says it has discovered an "organised attempt" to rig the outcome of the Today programme's Personality of the Year Award in favour of Tony Blair. First round polls were closed early after it was found that a note had been circultated to Labour workers from within the party urging them to vote. Labour insists nothing improper took place but Tories want a Commons debate. Depsite the efforts Mr Blair still did not get enough votes to be shortlisted.
