AT WESTMINSTER THIS WEEK ` FRIDAY

TOURISM National Heritage Secretary Virginia Bottomley announced a cash boost for tourism in London. Mrs Bottomley told MPs that a £1.5m Government grant would be matched by the British Tourist Authority. The private sector would be expected to more than match that total she added. Labour spokesman Jack Cunningham called for more cross-departmental cooperation

BUILDING SOCIETIES RAISE MORTGAGE RATES

Millions of home owners are to have their mortgage repayments increased after two lenders followed the Abbey National's rate rise. The Northern Rock is raising its rate by 0.5% & the Coventry by 0.26%. They follow Chancellor Kenneth Clarke's 0.25% base rate rise on October 30. Abbey National has defended its 0.25% hike as a boost to its 12m savers. Other lenders like the Halifax & the Woolwich are thought likely to follow.

UK "PLAYS DOWN NEED FOR ZAIRE FORCE"

Britain does not see any reason to send a large-scale multinational force to Zaire defence sources have said. Flights over eastern Zaire had found the "comparatively small" number of 200 000 refugees compared with the UN's estimated 700 000 they added. No formal MoD confirmation is expected for several days. Ambassadors from 14 countries gave the go-ahead over a week ago to send a Canadian-led force to Zaire.

use motorways in Europe. In Belgium & Germany they have to pay road tax at an average cost of £5 per day per wagon. If other European wagons were charged road tax when in Britain the extra could be put to good use ` repairing our roads & keeping road tax down. Mrs J Fowke Leeds

NEW REGULATIONS GOVERN ABSENT PARENTS

The Child Support Agency has adopted new discretionary powers in deciding the level of maintenance payments demanded from absent parents. The new system is known as "departures" because it allows departures from the CSA's standard formula. Approved by Social Security Minister Andrew Mitchell it recognises fathers' expenses & divorce settlements. But fathers' groups say it will lead to further financial demands on parents.
