Another 13 people were injured in the explosion in Sindlingen Frankfurt. Police said the woman aged around 30 was deranged but otherwise had no idea why she had killed herself. Photos of the dead woman have been released by the authorities in an effort to identify the killer.

BOMB WARNING TO MAZE PRISON OFFICERS
Police have warned prison officers at the Maze jail in County Antrim to remain vigilant after a security alert. A major operation was launched last night after a caller claiming to be from the IRA said a device had been planted under a prison officer's car. Army bomb disposal experts found nothing during a search of a car park outside the officer's social club. The alert comes after apparent tit-for- tat attacks in Belfast at the weekend.

CAPTORS TREATED US FAIRLY ` EX-HOSTAGE
One of the two Britons freed by gunmen in Peru says he & the other hostages were well-treated by their captors. Roger Church told a news conference in the capital Lima that "at no time had anyone been mistreated". The diplomat added: "I'm just pleaseed to be reunited with my family in time for Christmas." About 140 hostages mainly Peruvian & Japanese are still being held by the left-wing Tupac Amaru guerrillas.

SUICIDE BOMBER "HAUNTED BY SON'S DEATH"
The woman who blew herself up in a church in Germany on Christmas Eve was haunted by the suicide of her son seven years ago local police have said. The 49-year-old woman had been in psychiatric care since her 18-year-old son threw himself under a train. Two other women were killed when she detonated two grenades during a packed midnight service at a Frankfurt church. Thirteen people were injured & one woman is still in a critical condition.

GERMAN JOURNALIST SOLD BOGUS PROGRAMMES
A German journalist has been jailed for four years for selling bogus television documentaries. The programmes featured staged racist gatherings drug smuggling & bomb- making operations. Michael Born was convicted of 17 counts of fraud & inciting racial hatred. The 38-year-old's bogus documentaries were shown widely on both German & Swiss television.

E GERMAN OFFICIALS FACE DOPING CHARGES
Fifty sports officials from former East Germany are to be charged with causing bodily harm by supplying athletes with performance-enhancing drugs. The charges are being prepared following an 18-month investigation. They are confined to cases in which athletes were given the drugs without their knowledge. Despite a population of only 17m East Germany won almost as many Olympic medals as the US & the USSR.

SOUTH AFRICAGunmen have shot dead four brothers in their home in politically volatile KwaZulu-Natal province. PRISONER FOUND DEAD IN HER PRISON CELL
Opposition politicians are demanding urgent action after a woman prisoner was found dead at Cornton Vale prison in Stirling. Five inmates have killed themselves at the prison in the past 15 months. Yvonne Gilmour 22 who was jailed for shoplifting & assault is also thought to have committed suicide. Scottish Secretary Michael Forsyth has called for a report but the Lib Dems say he should consider closing the jail

PROTESTERS BACK ON STREETS OF BELGRADE
Around 100 000 anti-government protesters have returned to the streets of Belgrade the day after 58 of their number were hurt in clashes. Braving snow & freezing temperatures they gathered for the 37th straight day of protests at the cancellation of opposition local election victories. The polls handed the opposition control of 15 of Serbia's largest cities. Five people were badly hurt in yesterday's scuffles.

ARRESTS FOLLOW "SUSPICIOUS" FIRE DEATH
Two people have been arrested in connection with a "suspicious" fire in which a 34-year-old woman died. A 33-year-old man & two young children were taken to hospital with injuries sustained in the fire in the Bushbury area of Wolverhampton. The condition of the two children was said to be serious. The two men ` who were taken into custody ` were said to be assisting police inquiries.
