FIREFIGHTERS CONTROL BLAZE AT GAS DEPOT

A blaze at a propane gas depot has forced the evacuation of 400 people. One man is in hospital suffering from burns after the depot near Bedale in North Yorkshire. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. Several of the more than 300 gas cylinders on the site exploded. The crisis is thought to have started when a cylinder exploded as it was loaded onto a lorry setting off the others.

FOOD POISON OUTBREAK CLAIMS 16TH VICTIM

The death toll in the E coli food poisoning outbreak has reached 16 with the death of a 91-year-old woman. The woman from Netherton near Wishaw in Lanarkshire had been admitted to hospital Airdrie on November 28 a Lanarkshire health spokesman said. She had contracted the E coli bug from produce bought from the Wishaw butchers at the centre of the crisis. In Lanarkshire 318 people still show symptoms of infection.

CARDINAL STEPS UP ATTACK ON ABORTION

Cardinal Basil Hume has launched a new attack on the "great evil" of abortion. The head of the Roman Catholic church in England & Wales says on TV: "I am quite convinced that abortion is ... unworthy of a civilised society." A spokesman for the anti-abortion group Life told BBC Radio they would be raising the profile of the issue. "We will...stop people like Tony Blair and Barbara Follett pretending they hold to a quasi pro-life position."

XMAS LIGHTS DEATH "ONE-IN-A-MILLION"

Investigators say the electrocution of a girl as she switched on Christmas lights was a "one-in-a-million" tragedy Cara Weatherstone aged six. from East Yorkshire died instantly because of a faulty wire in a table lamp. The lights were wired through the lamp and Cara died because she had her bare foot on a copper pipe & was earthed. Trading Standards manager John Griffiths said there should be no panic about the safety of Christmas lights.

TRIO TO BE QUESTIONED OVER GIRL'S DEATH

Three men have been arrested in connection with the death of a 17-year- old girl. The girl's body was discovered in a house in South Elmsall West Yorkshire yesterday. A post mortem examination has been carried out & police say her death was suspicious. The three men are due to be questioned about the incident.
