McVEIGH ABANDONS OKLAHOMA BOMB APPEAL

Oklahoma bomber Timothy McVeigh has asked a federal judge to end his appeal and set a date for his execution. McVeigh was convicted of murder & conspiracy & sentenced to death over the 1995 bombing in which 168 people died & more than 500 were injured. He said he believed he was competent to make the decision but would undergo a court-ordered psychological evaluation. McVeigh also acknowledged he was acting against his lawyers' advice.

ATHLETE MODAHL FAILS IN DAMAGES CLAIM

Athlete Diane Modahl has lost her High Court damages action over a ban imposed in the wake of drug-taking allegations. Mrs Modahl 34 had alleged bias on the part of a disciplinary committee which imposed the four-year ban in 1994. The ban was lifted in 1995 by an independent appeal panel. Mrs Modahl was claiming £480 000 spent on legal & medical advice plus a similar figure in punitive damages from the British Athletic Federation.

RULING PARTY LOSES MAJORITY IN GHANA

Ghana's opposition New Patriotic Party has stripped the ruling party of its majority in parliament. With results in from all but one constituency the NPP has 97 of parliament's 200 seats with 90 for the ruling National Democratic Congress. In the presidential poll the NPP's John Kufuor is on 48.44% against 44.80% for Vice-President John Atta Mills. President Jerry Rawlings of the NDC is standing down after 19 years in power.

ZIMBABWE "SPYING" ON ITS BRITISH EXILES

Almost 40 Zimbabwean agents are spying on exiled opponents of President Robert Mugabe in Britain it is claimed. The Daily Telegraph reports that the country's Central Intelligence Organisation is also monitoring phone calls e-mails & faxes. The opposition Movement for Democratic Change claims exiles are living in fear after being sent a letter of warning. But a Zimbabwean Government spokesman said there was "nothing to worry about"

A BAD DAY FOR JUDGES ` COURT DISSENTER

One of four US Supreme Court justices who opposed the reversal of the Florida recounts has condemned the decision. Justice John Paul Stevens said: "We may never know with complete certainty the identity of the winner of this year's presidential election." But he went on: "The identity of the loser is perfectly clear. "It is the nation's confidence in the judge as an impartial guardian of the law " he continued.

Later Mr Clinton met crowds of well-wishers in Hyde Park after flying into London by military helicopter. The stroll came ahead of a meeting with the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

GORE ENDS BATTLE FOR FLORIDA RECOUNT

Al Gore has told supporters fighting for a recount of contested Florida votes to suspend their efforts. His campaign chairman William Daley announced that Mr Gore would address the nation later today. He is widely expected to admit defeat in the race for the White House handing victory to George W Bush. The address is expected to come during evening news bulletins in the US ` early on Thursday UK time.

NO GRUDGE AGAINST RUSSIA SAYS CASTRO

Russia despite the fact its withdrawal of aid to the Caribbean island caused much hardship Fidel Castro said. The Cuban president said he was looking forward to the imminent visit of Russia's President Vladimir Putin. Castro said Cuba wanted to see Russia overcome the crisis which has plagued it for the past 10 years. ANGRY VAUXHALL STAFF IN ANOTHER PROTEST

Hundreds of angry Vauxhall workers are staging another demonstration over the decision to close the plant at Luton Beds with the loss of 2 000 jobs. Furious employees at the car factory have converged on the company's Luton headquarters to express their anger. It is thought they are unhappy with the redundancy package on offer. Earlier they booed the plant's managing director & demanded he quit after he spoke to workers.

VAUXHALL WORKERS HOLD SYMPATHY WALK-OUT

Vauxhall workers have staged a walk-out in support of 2 000 sacked colleagues at the company's Luton factory. Vauxhall's car plant at Ellesmere Port Cheshire is at a standstill after 1 500 staff went home earlier today. Employees at its Luton warehouse have also walked out after hearing the town factory will close within 15 months. Unions have warned up to 10 000 British jobs could go because of the effect on supply firms.
