BRITAIN'S OLDEST WOMAN DIES AGED 109

The oldest woman in Britain has died aged 109 ` just one day after learning she had made it into the record books. Eva Pickles a non-smoker & almost teetotal once attributed her longevity to an avoidance of medicines & pills. Eva was born in Swindon in 1891 & ran a drapery shop with her husband Fred. She died at her home in Fordingbridge Hants. Eva inherited the title of Britain's oldest woman after the death of Eva Morris aged 114.

THREE ARRESTED IN DAMILOLA MURDER PROBE

Police investigating the killing of 10- year-old Damilola Taylor have arrested three people. Two 13-year-old youths & a woman aged 39 were arrested at around 6am at addresses in Southwark south east London in connection with the killing. They were taken to south London police stations & will be questioned later. The Nigerian youngster bled to death after being stabbed near his home at the north Peckham estate on Monday.

PINOCHET'S OPPONENTS WELCOME CHARGES

Opponents of former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet have welcomed a ruling accusing him of kidnap & murder. He was charged yesterday in relation to the actions of a 1973 military squad known in Chile as the Caravan of Death. Lawyers seeking Pinochet's prosecution say they are confident he will be tried and convicted in his own country. His legal team say they are appealing against an order for the former General's house arrest.

KING IN COURT ON SEX ABUSE CHARGES

Pop impresario Jonathan King has been remanded on bail until January 2 accused of sexually abusing three boys in the 1970s. Mr King 55 appeared before Staines Magistrates' Court in Surrey. The charges which Mr King has publicly rejected as "absurd" relate to three boys aged between 13 & 15 at the time The former public school boy of Bayswater west London was arrested after police raided his home last week.

FATHER VISITS SCENE OF DAMILOLA KILLING

The father of Damilola Taylor has been to the spot in Peckham south London where the 10-year-old was killed. Richard Taylor who flew into the UK from Nigeria yesterday wept for his "beautiful beautiful boy". Mr Taylor & other family members were allowed time alone at the scene where they left flowers. "They are extremely upset. If my own son was killed I would want to know where he died " said Supt Rod Jarman.

MAN IN COURT ON THREE MURDER CHARGES

A 35-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murders of three women who were killed over a four-day period. Philip Smith of Sparkbrook Birmingham was remanded in custody by city magistrates. He is accused of killing Carol Jordan Jodie Hyde & Rosemary Corcoran between November 8 & 12 last year. He spoke only to confirm his name address & date of birth during the brief hearing.

THIRTY-SIX DEAD IN INDIA TRAIN CRASH

At least 36 people have died & more than 120 have been injured in a train crash in northern India. A crowded passenger train heading to Amritsar crashed into a goods train near Chandigarh Punjab. Officials said initial investigations suggested a technical fault was responsible for the crash. The final wagons of the goods train appeared to have derailed & strayed into the path of the passenger train.

MISSING BROTHERS TURN UP SAFE AND SOUND

Two missing brothers who failed to turn up at school have been found. James Potts nine and his brother Michael seven left home in Bootle Merseyside at 8.15am dressed in maroon & black school uniforms. The boys both with fair hair did not arrive at Thomas Grey School. But they later turned up safe & well at the mother's house at 4.45pm. Their "disappearance" sparked a major police search of the area.

POLICE PROBE MERCY KILLING CONFESSION

Police are investigating a man's live radio phone-in confession that he killed his terminally ill mother. The man who gave his name as John told BBC Radio Sheffield he had given his cancer-stricken mother an overdose of liquid morphine four years ago. He spoke on a phone-in on euthanasia's legalisation in the Netherlands. South Yorkshire police said they had been informed about the confession but had not yet traced the caller.
