MONDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS AT WESTMINSTER

The Government was accused of "bungling" the sale of the Millennium Dome amid claims the site would be worth £300m more if the building was pulled down. Tory MP Michael Fabricant warned that "dumbing down" of religious programmes could produce a "happy-clappy newy- agey trendy-bendy BBC". Culture Secretary Chris Smith said the Government was proud that nearly 4m visitors had so far enjoyed free entry to London's Tate Modern gallery.

HEAD ACCUSED OF ASSAULTING EIGHT PUPILS

A village school head teacher is to appear in court accused of assaulting eight of the ten pupils in her care. Elizabeth Carey 51 has been suspended from the ten-pupil Milfield School in Wooler Northumberland. Ms Carey who has taught there for six years denies the allegations. The National Union of Teachers said it would support her at Berwick Magistrates Court when she appears on a date which is yet to be fixed.

MAN LINKED TO MISSING BRITON ON TRIAL

A Japanese executive who has been linked to the case of missing British bar hostess Lucie Blackman pleaded not guilty in Tokyo to rape. Tokyo company executive Joji Obara 48 went on trial accused of drugging & raping a British woman & a Canadian woman on separate occasions. He has admitted meeting Ms Blackman once at the bar where she worked but denied involvement in her disappearance Miss Blackman went missing in July after saying she was off to the seaside

TEENAGER IN COURT OVER CARNIVAL KILLING

A man charged with the murder of a young father at this year's Notting Hill Carnival has appeared before West London magistrates' court. Sean Cephnis 19 unemployed from Wembley north-west London is accused of murdering Greg Watson on August 28. He was stabbed to death while making his way home from the carnival with a group of relatives & friends. Mr Watson from Northolt Middlesex had a three-week-old baby daughter.

TRIMBLE STRESSES NEED FOR DIASARMAMENT

Northern Ireland First Minister David Trimble has said lasting peace is impossible until the IRA disarms. He told a Belfast audience including US President Bill Clinton that only this would end his ban on Sinn Fein attending official cross-border talks. Mr Trimble said: "I do not intend to let the ship of peace sink on the rocks of old habits & hard grudges." Sinn Fein will contest the ban in court on Friday.

SHUTTLE RETURNS FROM SPACE STATION TRIP

The US space shuttle Endeavour has landed at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida after an 11-day mission to the International Space Station. The crew fitted the station with wing- shaped solar panels stretching 240ft. Three spacewalks were needed to attach the £400m wings hook up all the cables and re-adjust the right wing. With the wings installed the station's three-man crew is now able to supply heat & power to the whole complex.

GOVT MAY IMPOSE OWN RAIL RECOVERY PLAN

The Government is threatening to impose its own plan on Railtrack if services do not improve in the New Year. Ministers could order a national recovery plan to be put in place a Downing Street spokesman has said. Meanwhile the Commons Transport Committee says Railtrack is unable to deal with the systematic failure of the way it manages the rail network. It said there was not enough experience of running the railways among directors

HEAD TEACHER FACES DISCIPLINARY HEARING

Head teacher Marjorie Evans who was suspended after being charged with slapping a 10-year-old pupil will now face a disciplinary hearing. Governors at the school in Gwent south Wales informed staff of their decision Mrs Evans was suspended from St Mary's Junior School in Caldicot in September 1999. She was convicted of the assault in July but cleared on appeal. The 56-year-old had hoped to return to the school before Christmas.

VIRAL ILLNESS HITS STIRLINGSHIRE SCHOOL

Investigations into a suspected viral illness at a Stirlingshire primary school has affected 150 children. Forth Valley Health Board said there is nothing to suggest the outbreak at Stenhousemuir Primary has been caused by contaminated food. Children have been asked to stay at home until they are free of symptoms while experts check food histories of those involved. A Dunblane school was hit by a similar virus in November of this year.

Tony Blair hailed the Nice summit of EU leaders as a success for Britain & said it had cleared the way for enlargement of the Union. However he told MPs it was time for the EU to find "a more rational way of decision making". Tory leader William Hague said the summit had produced "three major steps to a European superstate". The Nice Treaty would not be ratified by a future Tory government he added.

MUGABE'S LONG-TIME RIVAL SITHOLE DIES

Zimbabwean opposition leader Ndabaningi Sithole has died in the United States of a heart problem aged 80. Mr Sithole was founding president of the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) party from 1963. He was ousted by President Robert Mugabe in the mid-1970s. He was sentenced to two years in jail for allegedly trying to assassinate Mr Mugabe in 1997 but never went to jail because of his age & poor health.
