PIGLET HEART VALVE USED IN BABY SURGERY

A Swansea baby is believed to be the youngest person in Britain to have had a transplant operation using a heart valve from a piglet. Amy Davies was close to death before the operation at Birmingham Children's Hospital when she was seven months old. A valve the size of a penny was flown in from the US after doctors failed to find a human donor. Nine months later Amy has astounded medics by making a strong recovery.

WORKER FALLS TO DEATH IN CRANE COLLAPSE

A man plunged 30ft to his death & another was seriously injured when the crane they were working on collapsed at Sheffield United's football ground. The crane is believed to have been being used by contractors working on the redevelopment of the ground. The injured man ` taken to the Northern General Hospital with multiple factures ` is not thought to be critical. An inquiry has been launched into what caused the accident.

DRIVER JAILED FOR TRIPLE-DEATH ACCIDENT

A drunk kerb-crawler who killed three women when he careered into them during a police chase has been jailed. Allan Jackson 39 was jailed for eight years after admitting causing death by dangerous driving in August. Jackson of Birkby Huddersfield had picked up a prostitute in the town when his BMW car was pursued by police. Bradford Crown Court heard his car mounted the pavement & hit the women aged 27-30 as they were walking home.

HIGHLAND VIOLENCE ON RISE CLAIMS STUDY

A new study has shown that violence across the Highlands appears to be on the increase with Inverness & Lochaber named as the worst areas. A health Board report indicates that on average four people a week received hospital treatment for assault over the past four years. The increase could be due to the recording of the cases for the study health officials claimed. Public Health Consultant Cameron Stark said the figures were "worrying".

GIRL 10 AND FATHER DIE IN AIR CRASH

A 10-year-old girl & her father were among four people killed when a light aircraft fell apart in mid air police have said. The single-engined Piper Arrow aircraft had taken off from Thruxton Airfield near Andover in Hampshire. Witnesses said the plane broke up before crashing near the village of Lambourn Berks yesterday afternoon. Civil Aviation Authority investigators have launched an inquiry.

BLOODY SUNDAY INQUIRY "MAY BE STOPPED"

The Bloody Sunday Inquiry has been told that Parliament may have to stop the tribunal if it believes it cannot conduct an effective investigation. The inquiry has been hearing arguments that some documents about security matters should not be revealed. Chairman Lord Saville asked what would happen if an effective inquiry could not be conducted without the documents. Inquiry Counsel Christopher Clark QC said Parliament might have to stop it.
