FISCHER REPEATS EU INTEGRATION CALL

German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer has repeated his call for deeper European integration during a speech to a London audience. But he made no mention of the ideas he put forward last year of a European government with an elected president. And he said integration would not mean abolition of the nation state. Mr Fischer was speaking after receiving an award from the British-German Forum for his contribution to the Euro debate

GERMAN FARMERS IN BSE SLAUGHTER PROTEST

The German authorities are continuing the first large-scale slaughter of an entire herd of cattle in spite of protests from farmers. Farmers in Mucheln in eastern Germany scuffled with police & shouted "Murderers" as lorries continued the removal of more than 1 000 cattle. The move follows the confirmation of a case of BSE in the herd. Since the first case was found in Germany last November 24 cases of mad cow disease have been confirmed.

SCHROEDER SHOOTS DOWN US MISSILE PLAN

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has said Russian opposition to a US missile defence plan so-called "Son of Star Wars" must be seriously considered. Russia had a vital role in lasting security in Europe he said demanding clarity from the US on the proposals. US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld again said the plan posed no threat but European leaders fear a new arms race. Nato chief Lord Robertson believes the plans would not affect the alliance.

FIRST MEMORIAL DAY TO MARK HOLOCAUST

Political & religious leaders are to attend a service to mark Britain's first Holocaust Memorial Day. It is being held exactly 56 years after Allied troops liberated the Auschwitz Nazi death camp at the end of WWII. Memorial days are also being marked in Germany Italy & Sweden. Tonight's service of remembrance is taking place at Methodist Central Hall in Westminster. It will be attended by survivors of the Holocaust.

WATCHDOG ASKS EU TO ACT ON TAINTED BEEF

The Food Standards Agency has asked the EU to takeurgent action to ensure there are nofurther breaches of measures to control mad cow disease. It condemned discoveries of banned spinal material in imported beef from Germany & Ireland as unacceptable. Normally meat imports from within the EU are not routinely inspected. single German carcass entering the UK.

THREE IRANIAN AGENTS FACE DEATH PENALTY

Three Iranian intelligence agents have been sentenced to death & five given life terms for murdering dissidents in 1998 news agency IRNA has reported. A closed military court acquitted three of the 18 defendants & gave the rest jail terms of up to 10 years. The murder victims were a secular nationalist leader his wife & two liberal writers. The intelligence ministry denied top officials had authorised the killings.

THAI POLICE PROBE MURDER OF BRITISH MAN

Police in Thailand are investigating the murder of a British man whose body was discovered in a hotel in the country the Foreign Office has said. The victim was found in the Kanchanaburi province on Saturday after flying into the country last week. The Sun newspaper said a couple were in custody after admitting to the murder. A Foreign Office official said the man's name would not be released until relatives had been informed.

A man has been arrested after a stolen lorry was driven the wrong way up the A1 in Nottinghamshire for about five miles ramming a police car before toppling into a field near Tuxford. PHONESBT says it will not increase the numbers of telephone boxes because the mobile phone revolution has left them bereft of callers. VICTORIA Royal Mail has been accused of dismissing the centenary of Queen Victoria's death by issuing a self- adhesive "jam jar label" instead of a commemorative stamp.

POLICE FOIL BOMB ATTACK ON CORSICA

French police say they have arrested two armed men caught red-handed as they planned to blow up a public works office on the island of Corsica. The men who were found in possession of guns & a bomb are suspected members of the Corsican separatist group Armata Corsa French media said. The arrests came after a police alert across France in response to a warning by Armata Corsa of imminent attacks. The group is demanding a probe into the killing of one of its top members.
