AIR PASSENGERS TO GET CHEAPER BA FARES

British Airways is to cut many of its long-haul economy & business class fares from the start of April. The move follows a change in the way it pays travel agents to sell its tickets. Subsequent savings can then be passed on to passengers the firm claims. Some long-haul economy fares could be cut by up to £110 the BBC understands. But the move means a rise in short-haul tickets of about £2. Tickets bought on BA's web site will get a £5 discount.

BLAIR TO OFFER PUPILS SPORTS GUARANTEE

Every schoolchild in England is to be guaranteed at least two hours a week of sporting activity if they want it the Prime Minister is to announce. Tony Blair will launch the scheme when he addresses British athletes from the Sydney Olympics & Paralympics teams. Mr Blair is expected to say that sport boosts self-esteem & self-confidence. He is also due to announce plans to create 2 000 sports assistant posts in schools by 2004 in his London speech.

TUESDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS AT WESTMINSTER

Fresh medical tests into the health effects of depleted uranium shells have been announced by the Government. Armed Forces Minister John Spellar said a voluntary screening programme would be set up for service personnel & civilians who served in the Balkans. Shadow Defence Secretary Iain Duncan Smith "generally" welcomed the statement but criticised the Ministry of Defence for making it "late in the day" after concerted efforts by military veterans.

HOON IN TALKS OVER INDIAN JET PURCHASE

Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon is on his way to India in a bid to finalise a deal worth more than £1bn to supply the country with Hawk jet trainer aircraft. Negotiations have been going on for 14 years but ministers hope a contract will be signed early next year. Mr Hoon will hold talks with Indian Defence Minister George Fernandes on defence co-operation. Mr Fernandes recently said India wanted to buy 66 of the British-made Hawks.

URANIUM WEAPONS SAVE LIVES SAYS HOON

Banning depleted uranium weapons would endanger the lives of British forces Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon has said. The weapons had saved lives in the Gulf War & Balkans conflicts he told Sky News's Sunday with Adam Boulton. "The reason why we will continue to use these weapons is that they are astonishingly effective and... are protecting troops in time of war." Some Nato countries have blamed DU for cancer deaths among Balkans servicemen.

Hospital waiting list figures in England fell by more than 50 000 in the last year official figures confirm. Health Minister John Denham welcomed the figures & said: "However you look at it waiting lists have come down." But Tories said there was a rise in the numbers of people waiting to be put on a list by a consultant. TROOPS OFFERED VOLUNTARY URANIUM TESTS

The Government is to launch a voluntary screening programme for Kosovo War veterans in the wake of the scare over depleted uranium (DU) used in weapons. In a statement to the Commons Armed Forces Minister John Spellar said that there was no evidence to suggest DU caused cancer or ill health in troops. And he said DU would be used in British weapons for the "foreseeable future". But he said he recognised the need to "reassure" people about their fears.

KOSTUNICA MEETS PREDECESSOR MILOSEVIC

Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica has held his first meeting with Slobodan Milosevic since the day he replaced him as president last October. The pair reportedly discussed recent events in Kosovo & relations between Serbia & Montenegro. The meeting came amid speculation that Mr Milosevic may face war crime charges Mr Kostunica has said the Yugoslav constitution bars the extradition of any national to a foreign country.

PALESTINIAN GIRLS INHALE TEAR GAS

About 100 Palestinian schoolgirls inhaled tear gas after Israeli troops fired the cannisters near a school in the West Bank it has been reported. The gas cloud spread through the school during a battle in Silat al-Dahr in which four Palestinian men were also reported injured by live bullets. In al-Khader two Palestinians were injured during a clash with troops. Meanwhile talks continue behind the scenes to try to reach a peace deal.

NEW CONCESSIONS IN BID TO RESTORE TRUST

Israeli troops & Palestinian police are said to be trading banter instead of bullets in a bid to restore trust. The reports from Netzarim in the Gaza Strip follow an Israeli decision to pull back its tanks & reopen a major road in Gaza to break the deadlock. Palestinians are also being allowed to move from the West Bank to Jordan & from Gaza to Egypt. Both sides are trying to end violence in which over 360 people have died.

TRIBUNAL CHARGES PLAVSIC WITH GENOCIDE

Former Bosnian Serb President Biljana Plavsic will face charges of genocide this week after surrendering to the war crimes tribunal in The Hague. Plavsic was deputy to Radovan Karadzic during the 1992-95 Balkans War. She took over from him in 1996. The 70-year-old faces charges of genocide crimes against humanity & war crimes at the Dutch court. She is being held in the tribunal's detention centre in Scheveningen.

BOSNIAN SERB LEADER FACES HAGUE COURT

Former president of the Bosnian Serb Republic Biljana Plavsic has pleaded not guilty to charges of genocide at the International war Crimes Tribunal. Plavsic is one the most senior figures to account for her role in atrocities committed in the former Yugoslavia. She was an extreme nationalist & enthusiastic backer of ethnic cleansing during the Bosnian war. During the war she was deputy to the Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic.
