AHERN TO ATTEND DOWNING STREET SUMMIT

Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern has announced he will attend a Downing Street summit on the Northern Ireland peace process on Wednesday. He has said there is no possibility of a deal on outstanding issues such as IRA decommissioning at the meeting. But he added that he is "determined... if not optimistic" that a resolution can eventually be achieved. A breakthrough is unlikely without progress "across all fronts" he added.

PASSPORT PROBE "CONCLUDED WITHIN WEEKS"

The inquiry into the Hinduja passport affair should be completed within weeks Downing Street has said. Sir Anthony Hammond QC told Cabinet Secretary Sir Richard Wilson he hoped to conclude it by the end of February. Prime Minister Tony Blair has promised that the report will be published. His official spokesman has said Sir Anthony's terms of reference are wide enough to allow him to look into any aspect of the affair.

PM's SPOKESMAN SAYS VAZ WILL NOT QUIT

Downing Street has defended Foreign Office$minister Keith Vaz after renewed demands for his resignation. It also rebutted newspaper reports that he failed to pay £15 000 in donations into his consituency accounts. The Prime Minister's official spokesman said repeating allegations "doesn't make them any truer". Further detailed complaints against Mr Vaz are currently before the Commons Standards Committee.

MILBURN SAYS ORGANS REPORT "SHOCKING"

The Health Secretary has said the report into the removal & storage of children's organs at Alder Hey hospital is "the most shocking he has ever read" The report will be published on Tuesday and is the result of an independent inquiry by Michael Redfern QC. Alan Milburn says it describes the "systematic harvesting" of children's organs without proper parental consent. In a speech tomorrow he will make a commitment to change the law on consent

SPEAKER ALLOWS QUESTIONS ON HINDUJAS

MPs may still question ministers on the Hinduja passport affair ` despite an on-going inquiry it has been ruled. The Speaker of the House of Commons Michael Martin added that ministers will be expected to give answers. The decision comes after the Tories accused the Government of trying to stifle questions by urging people to wait for the result of the inquiry. Former Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Mandelson resigned over the affair.

HOLOCAUST WORLD'S GREATEST EVIL ` BLAIR

Tony Blair has said the Nazi Holocaust "was the greatest act of collective evil the world has ever known". At a memorial service in London the Prime Minister said the slaughter was "a turning-point in... human history". He added that the Holocaust must be remembered so that people have "courage to confront prejudice & persecution". But across the world "racism extreme nationalism & bigotry" are still "actively at work" Mr Blair warned.

AUSTRALIA TRIES TO HALT "BRAIN DRAIN"

Prime Minister John Howard is to spend #1.1bn on a plan to reverse the drain of scientific expertise from Australia. "Backing Australia's Ability" sets out five years' worth of spending to turn around the so-called brain drain. It focuses on giving tax breaks to businesses to encourage them to spend more on research & development. Universities will get more money for equipment & research grants will be doubled. University science & technology places will also increase.

CAMPBELL DENIES QUERYING MANDELSON MIND

Tony Blair's spokesman has denied he questioned Peter Mandelson's state of mind following the Hinduja passport row Alastair Campbell said he called Mr Mandelson "curiously detached" over a phone call the ex-Northern Ireland Secretary made to him a week ago. Mr Campbell said he only meant Mr Mandelson did not see press coverage of the Hinduja row as "a great problem". Mr Mandelson "was is & will continue to be a friend of mine " he added.
