TORIES PLAN BLITZ ON INNER-CITY DECAY

The Conservatives have pledged to tackle decay in Britain's inner cities with a blitz on dirty streets. Councils would face a 72-hour deadline to clear up vandalism & rubbish under proposals to be included in the party's next election manifesto. The US Congress has confirmed the election of George W Bush as US President under the chairmanship of his defeated rival Vice-President Al Gore. The Senate & House of Representatives convened jointly to read & confirm the votes of the Electoral College. A succession of House members tried to raise points of order alleging election misconduct & fraud. But Mr Gore overruled them because no Senator supported the points of order.

TYCOON POISED TO BECOME THAI PREMIER

Telecommunications tycoon Thaksin Shinawatra is poised to become Thailand's prime minister general election exit polls indicate. His Thai Rak Thai (Thais Love Thais) party is forecast to win around 200 of the 500 seats in the lower house. Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai whose Democrat Party looks set to win around 100 seats has conceded defeat. Candidates from 37 parties are standing and analysts say a coalition is likely.

DEMOCRAT TIPPED FOR BUSH CABINET POST

US president-elect George W Bush is preparing to confirm his first cabinet appointments with at least one Democrat set to be among the names. An announcement due tomorrow may offer concessions to his political opponents. Among the Democrats tipped for a post is Louisiana Senator John Breaux who is to meet Mr Bush in Texas. It is thought he may be offered the job of energy secretary but he is said to be reluctant to give up his Senate seat

BUSH NOMINEE WITHDRAWS OVER IMMIGRANT

George W Bush's nominee for Labour Secretary has withdrawn her nomination after allowing an illegal immigrant to live in her house. Linda Chavez pulled out after it was revealed a woman from Guatemala had lived in her home in the early 1990s. It was also revealed that she had given money to the immigrant. Mrs Chavez insisted she had done nothing wrong but was withdrawing because she had become a "distraction".

INDONESIA GIVES HOME RULE TO PROVINCES

The Indonesian government is introducing self-rule for its 26 provinces in a move which it hopes will counteract separatist disturbances. SCHROEDER AND PUTIN ATTEND XMAS SERVICE

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder & Russian President Vladimir Putin have marked the Russian Orthodox Christmas. The leaders & their wives attended a service at Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral for a service led by the head of the Russian Orthodox Church. Earlier they took a stroll in the Kremlin & the Red Square at the start of Mr Schroeder's two-day visit. Tonight the two leaders were due to celebrate Mrs Putin's birthday.
