Some troops are being sent to private hospitals for treatment because of a shortage of medical personnel in the armed forces it has emerged. The Ministry of Defence has signed contracts with Bupa & the Nuffield Hospital Group to provide treatment. Figures last July revealed a shortfall of over 25% in the number of medical personnel an MoD spokesman said. Only 6 153 of the 8 543 defence medical services posts were filled at that time

Interior Minister Jaime Mayor Oreja has called for a Europe-wide arrest warrant which would make the extradition of suspects unnecessary. He said the warrant would end the "limitations" which hindered countries in the fight against crime. GEORGIA Tbilisi & Ankara have agreed to remove anti-personnel mines from their joint border & not to use them for border protection in the future. Georgian Defence Minister Davit Tevzadze said Georgia & Turkey were working to clear the mines.

MILBURN SAYS ORGANS REPORT "SHOCKING"

The Health Secretary has said the report into the removal & storage of children's organs at Alder Hey hospital is "the most shocking he has ever read" The report will be published on Tuesday and is the result of an independent inquiry by Michael Redfern QC. Alan Milburn says it describes the "systematic harvesting" of children's organs without proper parental consent. In a speech tomorrow he will make a commitment to change the law on consent

UK SOLDIER KILLED IN FIGHT IN AUSTRIA

A member of the British Army bobsleigh team has died in an attack outside a nightclub in Innsbruck Austria the Ministry of Defence has said. The soldier was named as Corporal Derek Osbourne 31 from Cumbria. He served in the Kings Own Royal Border Regiment. The soldier & an uninjured team-mate were caught up in a fight with between six & 10 people a spokesman said. Austrian police said the soldier was kicked several times in the head.

KIDNAP GIRL FREED IN ISLAND GUN BATTLE

Philippino troops have rescued the six- year-old stepdaughter of an Inverness man in a 15-minute gun battle. Eiman Grant was taken to safety from the island of Basilan after the kidnappers abandoned the girl when they realised troops were closing in. Military sources said none of the abductors was killed or injured in the fight & no ransom had been paid. Eiman was kidnapped by a Muslim separatist group from her mother's home three weeks ago.
