ONE DEAD AFTER CAR BLAST IN NORTH SPAIN

A navy cook has been killed & two passers-by have been injured in a car bomb blast in northern Spain. No group admitted planting the bomb but reports said it bore the hallmarks of Basque separatist group Eta. The bomb exploded as the man started his car near a military compound in the Basque city of San Sebastian. Eta has admitted being behind the deaths of 23 people since it ended a 14-month truce in December 1999.

HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR MAKES PLEA TO YOUNG

A survivor of the Holocaust has urged young Scots to remember the magnitude of the Nazi atrocity & ensure it never happens again. Rabbi Ernest Levy was transported from his Budapest home at the age of 19 to the Auschwitz concentration camp. He will give personal testimony at a Holocaust Memorial Day service at Edinburgh's Usher Hall on Saturday ` the first of its kind in Scotland. Rev Levy is cantor of the Giffnock & Newlands synagogue.

TOURISTS DIE IN VENEZUELA AIR ACCIDENT

A plane with 24 people including 20 European & US tourists has crashed in Venezuela killing all on board. A DC-3 operated by the Rutaca airline crashed at 10.15 GMT last night near the southern city of Ciudad Bolivar. Local television reports say the victims came from the Netherlands Italy Hungary the US Austria & six from Venezuela including three crew. Rutuca pilot Victor Arauja said it was not known why flight-224 came down.

RAPIST JAILED FOR 10 YEARS FOR ATTACK

A West Lothian man who repeatedly raped a young mother in her home then attempted to murder her has been jailed for 10 years. The High Court in Edinburgh heard how Douglas Connell 21 watched his 19- year-old victim crawl to a neighbour's home for help after the attack. Lord Penrose described the attack as horrendous & of the "utmost gravity". Connell admitted repeatedly raping & attempting to murder the woman at her home last September.

NEW WORKPLACE GUIDELINES FOR NHS STAFF

Health minister Susan Deacon has announced plans to make NHS managers deliver family-friendly policies & crack down on workplace bullying. The minister explained six new guidelines to improve working conditions for NHS employees during a conference in Edinburgh. The guidelines included proposals to improve training & strengthen equal opportunities policies. They seek to develop facilities for unions & monitor staff performance.

BISTRO CHAIN WITH RECEIVERS AFTER CRASH

The Pierre Victoire restaurant chain has gone into receivership ` for the second time. The current owners Edinburgh based firm Voila bought the restaurant chain from its founder Pierre Levicky when it went bust two year ago. The new owners today blamed their financial troubles on dramatic changes in the marketplace. The restaurants employ more than 150 staff across the UK ` with around 50 of them in Scotland.

GOVERNMENT URGED TO RAISE CARE-LEVELS

The Government is being urged to give all elderly people across the UK the same level of care which has now been promised to pensioners in Scotland. The Labour-led Scottish Executive has said that nursing care for people at home or living in residential homes would be made available free of charge. Director-General of Age Concern Gordon Lichman welcomed the Scottish decision But he said Westminster would now have to seriously consider following suit.
