Detectives investigating the murder of eight-year-old Sarah Payne received 270 calls after an appeal on Crimewatch UK. A distinctive clown-patterned curtain found during the investigation featured in an appeal on the BBC show last night West Sussex police said the owners of the curtain had now been traced & had been able to offer further information. Sarah's body was found alongside the A29 near Pulborough West Sussex two weeks after she disappeared on July 1.

A Spanish farmers' union has said that Britain is responsible for cases of mad cow disease in other European countries and should be made to pay compensation. Local media reported that the head of the Asaja union Pedro Barato said the UK had been irresponsible to continue to export feed containing animal meal. Britain banned animal meal from cattle feed in 1988 because of BSE but carried on exporting it to Europe he said. The UK was at fault because it allowed EU farmers to buy the feed he added.
A navy cook has been killed & two passers-by have been injured in a car bomb blast in northern Spain. No group admitted planting the bomb but reports said it bore the hallmarks of Basque separatist group Eta. The bomb exploded as the man started his car near a military compound in the Basque city of San Sebastian. Eta has admitted being behind the deaths of 23 people since it ended a 14-month truce in December 1999.

The Pierre Victoire restaurant chain has gone into receivership ` for the second time. The current owners Edinburgh based firm Voila bought the restaurant chain from its founder Pierre Levicky when it went bust two year ago. A record number of would-be students eager to share their college days with Prince William have been flooding St Andrews University with applications. Chancellor Gordon Brown has pledged Labour will target priority groups with a series of tax credits aimed at raising their incomes.
