SCHOOLS EVACUATED AFTER BOMBS FOUND

At least half a dozen improvised pipe bombs have been discovered on the roof of a primary school in a loyalist area of east Belfast. Some 160 pupils & staff from Beechfield Primary School and adjoining McArthur nursery school were evacuated to a nearby hall. Bomb disposal experts were called in when staff found one bomb on the roof. The experts then found five more apparently being stored on the roof.

A navy cook has been killed & two passers-by have been injured in a car bomb blast in northern Spain. No group admitted planting the bomb but reports said it bore the hallmarks of Basque separatist group Eta. The bomb exploded as the man started his car near a military compound in the Basque city of San Sebastian. Eta has admitted being behind the deaths of 23 people since it ended a 14-month truce in December 1999.

ZIMBABWE PAPER'S PRINTWORKS BLOWN UP

A bomb blast has destroyed a printing press belonging to a privately owned Zimbabwe newspaper which is critical of the Mugabe government. No-one was reported injured in the 3am attack on the Daily News press. The paper's deputy editor said staff would go to work at once & try to find an alternative press to print Monday's edition.

1 000 FEARED DEAD IN INDIAN EARTHQUAKE

Up to 1 000 people are feared to have been killed in an earthquake in the western Indian state of Gujarat. The quake which measured 6.9 on the Richter scale rocked buildings in Pakistan India & Nepal. Most of the casualties were from the town of Bhuj near the Pakistan border while 200 are believed to have died in the city of Ahmedabad. At least eight people died in the southern Pakistani province of Sindh.

HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR MAKES PLEA TO YOUNG

A survivor of the Holocaust has urged young Scots to remember the magnitude of the Nazi atrocity & ensure it never happens again. Rabbi Ernest Levy was transported from his Budapest home at the age of 19 to the Auschwitz concentration camp. He will give personal testimony at a Holocaust Memorial Day service at Edinburgh's Usher Hall on Saturday ` the first of its kind in Scotland. Rev Levy is cantor of the Giffnock & Newlands synagogue.

BLACKMAN SUSPECT FACING VIOLENCE CHARGE

A Japanese property developer suspected of involvement in the disappearance of British bar hostess Lucie Blackman has been charged with a new crime. Joji Obara 48 is accused of sexual violence resulting in the death of an Australian woman in 1992. Obara already faces five charges of raping Japanese & foreign women. Miss Blackman 22 of Sevenoaks in Kent had been working as a bar hostess when she went missing in July.

SOLDIER DIES AFTER SHOOTING AT BARRACKS

A soldier who was shot at his barracks earlier this week has died in hospital. Corporal Anthony Green 25 from Carlisle Cumbria was a chef with the Royal Logistics Corps attached to the 1st Battalion The Royal Scots. He was shot as he walked through Shackleton Barracks Ballykelly County Londonderry. The Army has confirmed the shot was fired from inside the camp. Police are investigating his death & have already questioned one man.

NATION PROUD OF NISSAN WORKERS SAYS PM

Tony Blair has visited the Nissan car plant in Sunderland to congratulate its workers on securing a huge new contract The Prime Minister chatted to workers at the Wearside plant the day after they won a £235m contract to build the new Micra model. Mr Blair said the deal had been secured due to the "highly skilled & productive workforce" at the plant. "The whole country is very proud " he told assembly-line workers.

US TEEN JAILED FOR "WRESTLING" MURDER

A Florida boy who said he accidentally killed a six-year-old girl while Lionel Tate 13 faces a life prison sentence without parole for the attack on Tiffany Eunick in July 1999. A Fort Lauderdale court heard Tate's traffic police officer mother had been baby-sitting the girl at their home. Tate punched kicked & stomped on the girl as his mother was sleeping.

UK TROOPS EXTEND SIERRA LEONE TRAINING

The Government has announced plans to extend British troops' training of the Sierra Leonean army by eight months until the end of September. Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon said the move would help make the West African state's army "self-sufficient". The British military presence will remain at around 600 at any time. British troops have made an "important contribution to stability in Sierra Leone" Mr Hoon added.

THREE IRANIAN AGENTS FACE DEATH PENALTY

Three Iranian intelligence agents have been sentenced to death & five given life terms for murdering dissidents in 1998 news agency IRNA has reported. A closed military court acquitted three of the 18 defendents & gave the rest jail terms of up to 10 years. The murder victims were a secular nationalist leader his wife & two liberal writers. The intelligence ministry denied top officials had authorised the killings.

ENGLISH ELDERLY "MAY COLONISE" FOR CARE

A former member of the Sutherland Commission has warned Scotland could be colonised by middle-class English if free care for the elderly is provided. Lord Lipsey who produced a report rejecting the recommendations said Scotland cannot afford free long term care for the elderly. He said "there will be a tremendous problem" with English people realising that they can get free personal care. He claimed they will "be waited on at the expense of the Scottish taxpayer".
