FOUR ACCUSED OF TRYING TO KILL REFUGEE

Four men have been charged with trying to kill a Turkish refugee who was left in a coma after a Christmas Eve attack. Cumali Sinankili faces permanent brain damage ` if he ever recovers ` after he was punched & kicked in the vicious assault in Bermondsey south London. Police say Mr Sinankili came to the UK in 1993 claiming political persecution. The four men all from Bermondsey & aged 19 to 23 have been charged with attempted murder & violent disorder.

BLACKMAN SUSPECT FACING VIOLENCE CHARGE

A Japanese property developer suspected of involvement in the disappearance of British bar hostess Lucie Blackman has been charged with a new crime. Joji Obara 48 is accused of sexual violence resulting in the death of an Australian woman in 1992. Obara already faces five charges of raping Japanese & foreign women. Miss Blackman 22 of Sevenoaks in Kent had been working as a bar hostess when she went missing in July.

ELDERLY CARE PLANS IN "TOTAL CONFUSION"

The Scottish Executive has been accused of leaving its intentions for care for the elderly in complete confusion. Yesterday the Executive appeared to make a U-turn promising to bring in free personal care for all. The SNP called the statement a con trick and Tory health spokeswoman Mary Scanlon also criticised the move. She said: "This is a delaying tactic which has been acknowledged by Alzheimer's Scotland and care of the elderly is in total confusion."

UK TROOPS EXTEND SIERRA LEONE TRAINING

The Government has announced plans to extend British troops' training of the Sierra Leonean army by eight months until the end of September. Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon said the move would help make the West African state's army "self-sufficient". The British military presence will remain at around 600 at any time. British troops have made an "important contribution to stability in Sierra Leone" Mr Hoon added.

DIABETES "CURE" SET TO UNDERGO UK TESTS

A potential cure for diabetes is to be tested in the UK it has been announced The pioneering technique involves transplanting cells into the livers of diabetics & ends the need for life- saving daily insulin injections. It was developed in Canada by UK-born surgeon James Shapiro & has led to 13 patients being effectively "cured". The charity Diabetes UK has set up seven centres to develop & refine the technique on British patients.

SARAH TELEVISION PLEA SPARKS 270 CALLS

Detectives investigating the murder of eight-year-old Sarah Payne received 270 calls after an appeal on Crimewatch UK. A distinctive clown-patterned curtain found during the investigation featured in an appeal on the BBC show last night West Sussex police said the owners of the curtain had now been traced & had been able to offer further information. Sarah's body was found alongside the A29 near Pulborough West Sussex two weeks after she disappeared on July 1.

An armed gang tied up a father and son before robbing them at their home in Cumbernauld. Electrical items mobile phones & computer equipment are believed to have been stolen. CRIMEA survey in Fife of 6 000 households has suggested that along with their health & children people worry most about crime. STAR Bookies are offering odds of 6-1 that Popstars reject Darius from Glasgow will have a solo number one hit single in 2001. Ladbrokes said he could have a successful solo career.

SOLDIER DIES AFTER SHOOTING AT BARRACKS

A soldier who was shot at his barracks earlier this week has died in hospital. Corporal Anthony Green 25 from Carlisle Cumbria was a chef with the Royal Logistics Corps attached to the 1st Battalion The Royal Scots. He was shot as he walked through Shackleton Barracks Ballykelly County Londonderry. The Army has confirmed the shot was fired from inside the camp. Police are investigating his death & have already questioned one man.

ONE DEAD AFTER CAR BLAST IN NORTH SPAIN

A navy cook has been killed & two passers-by have been injured in a car bomb blast in northern Spain. No group admitted planting the bomb but reports said it bore the hallmarks of Basque separatist group Eta. The bomb exploded as the man started his car near a military compound in the Basque city of San Sebastian. Eta has admitted being behind the deaths of 23 people since it ended a 14-month truce in December 1999.

MINI-RESHUFFLE AFTER MANDELSON RESIGNS

Energy minister Helen Liddell is taking up her new duties as Scottish Secretary after her predecessor John Reid was appointed to the N Ireland office. Foreign Office minister Peter Hain is to replace Ms Liddell at the Department of Trade & Industry. Mr Hain will be replaced by Scottish Office minister Brian Wilson. A replacement for Mr Wilson will be announced later today Downing Street has said.

AVOID TRAVEL TO ZANZIBAR ` BRITISH GOVT

The Foreign Office is advising Britons to avoid non-essential travel to Zanzibar after violent clashes between police & protesters on the islands. Britons already visiting the popular tourist destination should stay indoors as the situation is "unstable & unpredictable" the Foreign Office said Up to 15 people are reported to have died in clashes over disputed elections Violence has been worst on Pemba the smaller of Zanzibar's two main islands.
