MOURNING IN KINSHASA AFTER KABILA DEATH
The Democratic Republic of Congo has begun a 30-day period of mourning after the official announcement of the death of President Laurent Kabila. The announcement ended two days of confusion over the president's fate. But it is still not clear who the killer was & what was the motive. President Kabila's body is due to be flown from Zimbabwe to southern Zaire tomorrow and brought to Kinshasa on Sunday for a funeral on Tuesday.

The funeral of Laurent Kabila the assassinated president of the Democratic Republic of Congo has taken place in the capital Kinshasa. Mr Kabila who was shot dead last week by a bodyguard was buried in a mausoleum at the Palace of the Nation in the country's parliament building. Security was tight with Angolan troops arriving amid fears of more unrest. Leading the mourners was Mr Kabila's son Joseph appointed acting president.

GM CROP TRIALS HAVE "LEGITIMATE" ROLE
A Parliament report has said GM crop farm trials have a legitimate role to play in the development the technology. The Environment Committee's inquiry was prompted by a petition from Friends of the Earth which called for Parliament to ban GM crop trials altogether. It said a ban would contravene European directives but said it was concerned about thousands of acres sewn last year with GM contaminated seed. There was surprise at the lack of plans for dealing with such an incident.

PUTIN PULLS TROOPS FROM REBEL CHECHNYA
President Vladimir Putin has decided to withdraw some Russian forces from the rebel region of Chechnya. Reports said Mr Putin also ordered the head of the FSB domestic security service a successor to the KGB to take over command of the operation.
