JOB FEARS AS COMPANY CALLS IN RECEIVERS
There is concern over the future for 129 workers at a Glasgow buiscuit maker after the firm said it had called in receivers. Gray Dunn said difficult trading conditions & the loss of a major European customer has forced the move. The firm which has been making biscuits in the city for more than 145 years has had to shed 86 jobs. It is hoped that a buyer can found for the business which includes well known brands like Blue Riband.

CONSORTIUM HAS EYE ON ITV NEWS CONTRACT
Satellite broadcaster BSkyB is to form part of a consortium which will bid to challenge ITN for the contract to supply news to ITV. It is joining forces with N Ireland independent TV contractor UTV US broadcaster CBS & Bloomberg & the Chrysalis group it has been announced. Each partner will take a 20% stake in the company bidding for the contract. They intend to approach the ITC & have asked ITV for an early meeting.

USA Miami couple who disciplined their
11-year-old son by ripping off his toenails dropping a sledgehammer on his feet & making him eat his own vomit have been imprisoned for life. SPAINA law has come into force which may lead to the expulsion of around 30 000 illegal residents in a bid to stem the tide of illegal immigration. JAPAN Economics Minister Fukushiro Nukaga has become the latest cabinet member to resign after admitting taking around £70 000 from an insurance company involved in a scandal.

BRITISH-IRISH COUNCIL MEETING POSTPONED
Tuesday's British-Irish Council meeting in Dublin has been postponed Northern Ireland First Minister David Trimble has said. He told the Northern Ireland Assembly the British & Irish governments had made the decision. It was felt the meeting would be a "distraction" to talks on resolving the deadlock over decommissioning he added Mr Trimble rejected claims that the Good Friday Agreement was in crisis.

GOVT URGED TO REMAIN FOCUSED ON PEACE
Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams has urged the Government not to allow Peter Mandelson's resignation to distract it from the search for peace in N Ireland. Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble praised Mr Mandelson in the Commons. He said his work in Northern Ireland had been appreciated by many people. The Democratic Unionist Party said few tears would be shed for Mr Mandelson who "refused to recognise" it spoke for the majority of the unionist community.
