A Parliament report has said GM crop farm trials have a legitimate role to play in the development the technology. The Environment Committee's inquiry was prompted by a petition from Friends of the Earth which called for Parliament to ban GM crop trials altogether. It said a ban would contravene European directives but said it was concerned about thousands of acres sewn last year with GM contaminated seed. There was surprise at the lack of plans for dealing with such an incident.

There is concern over the future for 129 workers at a Glasgow buiscuit maker after the firm said it had called in receivers. Gray Dunn said difficult trading conditions & the loss of a major European customer has forced the move. The firm which has been making biscuits in the city for more than 145 years has had to shed 86 jobs. It is hoped that a buyer can found for the business which includes well known brands like Blue Riband.

Part of the North Sea will be closed to cod fishermen to restore dangerously low stocks the European Union has said The Brussels Commission expects to keep the emergency measures in place for 12 weeks during the spawning season. All boats fishing cod will be banned from protected areas while permits reports & monitoring are tightened. An agreement has been reached in Brussels to help conserve cod in the North Sea securing a better than expected deal for Scottish fishermen. Mike Park of the Scottish White Fish Producers' Association said it was a compromise ` but could not be described as a "good deal". Maintenance & process workers at the Dounreay nuclear plant in Caithness have voted for industrial action over a pay dispute. The workers who are members of the AEEU have rejected a 3% pay deal. The deal has already been accepted by the majority of the UK Atomic Energy Authority's workforce. The UKAEA pledged to continue talking to the union with the hope that the dispute could be concluded without the need for industrial action.
