SKILLS SHORTAGE "REACHES RECORD LEVELS"

Shortages of skilled workers have reached record levels in parts of British industry a new report claims. More than two out of three firms were being hit by a shortage of skilled staff according to a survey of 550 organisations by employment group Reed. The service sector reported record levels of skills shortages. The survey said firms in the Thames Valley East Anglia Northern Ireland and the Midlands were the worst hit.

MUSEUM SET FOR MARATHON STAR WARS EVENT

British cinema-goers are to be given the chance to see all four Star Wars films in sequence for the first time. The National Museum of Photography Film & Television in Bradford West Yorkshire is expecting a sell-out for the nine-hour movie marathon. Bill Lawrence the museum's head of film said the Festival of the Force would be a "major film event". The screenings will take place at the museum on February 24 & 25.

CALL FOR CAPPING AFTER £5m TORY GIFT

A Labour MP has called for donations to political parties to be capped after it emerged that the Conservatives are to receive £5m from a single donor. David Winnick also demanded a five to ten year gap between donations & receiving a peerage. Betting firm millionaire Stuart Wheeler said his donation to the Tories was little more than "small change" to him. Mr Wheeler said he was responding to three recent £2m donations to Labour.

The Conservative Party's plans for an #8bn tax cut are "an insult to Mickey Mouse" Tony Blair's office has said. An official said they had a "back of the envelope feel to them" & described them as a "joke". But shadow chancellor Michael Portillo insisted the Tories could still reach spending targets on health transport defence & the police. He promised to match Labour's pledges in all these areas.

MANDELSON ADMITS PASSPORT CONVERSATION

Peter Mandelson spoke to a minister about the Hinduja brothers' bid for a UK passport the Prime Minister's official spokesman has admitted. Yesterday Downing Street said the Northern Ireland Secretary had not got involved in the tycoons' application. But Mr Mandelson has now recalled a brief conversation with Home Office minister Mike O'Brien on their behalf. He has been accused of helping them in exchange for a £1m Millennium Dome loan

MANDELSON QUITS AFTER PASSPORT ROW

Peter Mandelson is resigning as Northern Ireland Secretary but insists he has not acted improperly in any way. Mr Mandelson admitted discussing Dome sponsor Srichand Hinduja's passport application with a Home Office minister The announcement that he was quitting came after he had been called to talks with Tony Blair in Downing Street. In his last Commons appearance before formally resigning Mr Mandelson paid tribute to the work of the RUC.

ALL SUSPECTS' DNA TO BE KEPT BY POLICE

Police will be able to keep all finger prints & DNA samples taken from suspects even if they are acquitted or not charged under proposed laws. But Home Secretary Jack Straw said the Criminal Justice & Police Bill would not undermine civil liberties. Files kept would triple in three years if they were no longer destroyed when suspects were acquitted or not charged. On-the-spot fines for drunken louts are also included in the bill.

GOVT DENIES MANDELSON PASSPORT CLAIMS

The Government has denied that Peter Mandelson "pulled strings" to help an Indian tycoon gain a UK passport. Tories have demanded an explanation over the Northern Ireland Secretary's involvement in Srichand Hinduja's case. He got a passport soon after loaning #1m to the Millennium Dome which Mr Mandelson was in charge of at the time. The Prime Minister's official spokesman said Mr Mandelson had merely referred Mr Hinduja's claim to the Home Office.
