CALIFORNIA BLACKOUT CAUSES STOCKPILING

A second day of blackouts in California has forced businesses to close causing consumers to stockpile essential goods. Torches candles & firewood are in demand as electricity companies beset by financial difficulties continue to work well below capacity. In San Francisco the local authority began legal action against 13 suppliers alleging conspiracy to raise prices. Politicians in America's richest state are putting together a rescue package.

BRAIN-DAMAGED BOY WINS £2.6m IN DAMAGES

A six-year-old boy left brain damaged after contracting the E.coli bug on a visit to a school farm has won £2.6m in damages at the High Court. Tom Dowling from Edgware north London was infected on a trip to Bowman's Open Farm near St Albans Hertfordshire two years ago. He almost died after falling into a coma & now needs 24-hour care. The farm & Barnet Education Authority admitted liability.

JUDGE KEEPS TWINS WITH FOSTER CARERS

A judge has ruled that twin baby girls adopted via the internet should remain in council foster care for now. Alan & Judith Kilshaw from Buckley Flintshire went to the High Court Birmingham to try to win back custody. But Mr Justice Kirkwood said they would remain where they are pending research on what was best for their welfare. Flintshire Council had applied to make the twins taken into the care of the authority last week "wards of court".

PAEDOPHILE CHARGED AFTER ARSON PROBE

A Welsh paedophile whose sentence was cut after a judge learned vigilantes had torched his home has been charged with starting the fire. Roger Gardener 56 was found guilty of sex attacks on girls in a St John's Ambulance group run by his nurse wife. On hearing of the fire Cardiff Crown Court cut his sentence out of sympathy. Police have now charged him with arson after a probe into the blaze at his home in Fleur-de-Lys near Blackwood.

EX-LOVER CAN BE SUED OVER "SON LIES"

A businessman has won permission to sue his former lover for fraud after he claimed she lied when saying her son was his. The man 53 from the West Midlands is reportedly seeking up to £250 000 for money spent on the boy over eight years The High Court ruling will mean the first case in English law of a domestic partner being sued for fraud. Lawyers for the woman 44 said it was "simply wrong" to go to court.

DOCTOR RENEWS MMR VACCINE SAFETY DOUBTS

More doubts have been raised about the safety of the vaccine for measles mumps & rubella. There was not "adequate evidence of safety" said Dr Andrew Wakefield at London's Royal Free Hospital in a medical journal Adverse Drug Reactions Trials were too small & did not follow children up for a long enough period to gauge problems he said. The Department of Health has "totally rejected" the research.

POSH TELLS OF AIRPORT LUGGAGE THEFT

Posh Spice Victoria Beckham has told a court how luggage containing a lock of her son Brooklyn's hair was stolen following a trans-Atlantic flight. Mark Oliver 20 of Stanwell west London denies stealing the suitcases after the singer returned to Heathrow from Miami in April last year. Isleworth Crown Court heard a family photo & clothes were also inside. Mr Oliver faces a further two charges of handling stolen goods.

DRIVE FOR CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE LAUNCHED

A drive to make better discipline in Scotland's classrooms a top priority has been launched by Education Minister Jack McConnell. Warning disruptive behaviour should be a concern for everyone he urged parents to work with schools to find ways of improving discipline. He made the call in Edinburgh where the first meeting was held today of a "task group" set up for that purpose. The group will look at existing priorities & consider improvements.
