QUESTIONS RAISED OVER ANNA PROBE CHIEF

The appointment of Lord Laming as head of the inquiry into the death of Anna Climbie has been questioned by Lib Dem health spokesman Paul Burstow. Eight-year-old Anna suffered horrific abuse at the hands of her carers. Lord Laming was head of Hertfordshire's social services unit when it was severely criticised for its handling of a child abuse case in 1990. Anna's funeral has taken place in her homeland the Ivory Coast.

MOURNING IN KINSHASA AFTER KABILA DEATH

The Democratic Republic of Congo has begun a 30-day period of mourning after the official announcement of the death of President Laurent Kabila. The announcement ended two days of confusion over the president's fate. But it is still not clear who the killer was & what was the motive. President Kabila's body is due to be flown from Zimbabwe to southern Zaire tomorrow and brought to Kinshasa on Sunday for a funeral on Tuesday.

ISRAELI WHO KILLED BOY AVOIDS JAIL TERM

A Jewish settler who beat a 10-year-old Palestinian boy to death in the West Bank has been sentenced to six months community service. The Israeli court said a plea-bargain was reached with Nahum Kurman who said he did not mean to kill Hilmi Shousha. The settlement security chief beat the boy's head with a pistol butt after stones were thrown at Jewish settlers. Mr Kurman escaped a sentence of up to 20 years for murder.

BURIAL FOR CONGO PRESIDENT "ON TUESDAY"

President Laurent Kabila of the Democratic Republic of Congo will be buried on Tuesday an information ministry source told Reuters. The body is to return to the capital Kinshasa on Sunday in preparation for burial in the city Reuters reported. Congo's charge d'affaires in Britain told the BBC that Mr Kabila had been assassinated & died in Zimbabwe. He added that Mr Kabila's son Joseph was running the country.

KABILA BURIED IN HIGH-SECURITY FUNERAL

The funeral of Laurent Kabila the assassinated president of the Democratic Republic of Congo has taken place in the capital Kinshasa. Mr Kabila who was shot dead last week by a bodyguard was buried in a mausoleum at the Palace of the Nation in the country's parliament building. Security was tight with Angolan troops arriving amid fears of more unrest. Leading the mourners was Mr Kabila's son Joseph appointed acting president.

US civil rights activist Jesse Jackson is temporarily removing himself from public life after admitting fathering a child during an extra-marital affair. In a statement he said it was no time for denials & that he was sorry for his actions. His daughter ` now 20 months old ` was conceived with a former aide. It happened during the period when Mr Jackson was counselling President Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky affair

KIEV TO RETURN BACH ARCHIVE TO GERMANY

The Ukrainian government says it will return a collection of manuscripts by the German composer Johann Sebastian Bach & his sons to Germany. The archive which was taken by the Soviet Union's Red Army after the war was feared lost for over 50 years. It was found in Ukraine's state museum two years ago & musical scholars say it is priceless & irreplaceable. The decision to return it was announced to coincide with President Leonid Kuchma's current visit to Germany.
