TIANANMEN PAPERS ARE FAKES SAYS CHINA

China says papers revealing secret government talks on the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown are fabricated. The papers published in the US claim to reveal talks between China's leaders prior to the order to stop the protests A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said the documents were not authentic. "Any attempt to...disrupt China by the despicable means of fabricating materials & distorting facts will be futile " he added.

Israeli & Palestinian negotiators are set to resume high-level talks aimed at securing Middle East peace officials from both sides have said. Israeli officials said the two sides would convene later today for the highest-level talks since December. Israeli foreign minister Shlomo Ben`Ami had cut short a Paris visit to return for "diplomatic consultations". The two sides will discuss a framework for peace based on US proposals.

GUNMEN KIDNAP GIRL SIX IN PHILIPPINES

A six-year-old girl has been kidnapped from her house by four suspected Muslim guerrillas in the Philippines. Eiman Grant abducted in the southern island of Basilan was at first thought to be British as her stepfather lives in Inverness. But the Foreign Office has since said she is not a British national. The girl's mother said the gunmen seized her daughter after she failed to meet the group's demand for money.

TALKS BID TO EASE MID-EAST TENSIONS

Attempts to ease tensions between Palestinians & Israelis have been aired in talks between Yasser Arafat and an Israeli cabinet minister. The Palestinian leader met Tel Aviv's Transport Minister Amnon Lipkin-Shahak at his headquarters in Gaza City. Israel has complained that the Palestinians are not doing enough to halt attacks on Israelis. The Palestinians want travel curbs lifted before they co-operate.

NEW CONCESSIONS IN BID TO RESTORE TRUST

Israeli troops & Palestinian police are said to be trading banter instead of bullets in a bid to restore trust. The reports from Netzarim in the Gaza Strip follow an Israeli decision to pull back its tanks & reopen a major road in Gaza to break the deadlock. Palestinians are also being allowed to move from the West Bank to Jordan & from Gaza to Egypt. Both sides are trying to end violence in which over 360 people have died.

PALESTINIANS REJECT CLINTON PEACE PLAN

The Palestinians have rejected US President Bill Clinton's proposals for peace in the Middle East reports say. Information minister Yasser Abed Rabbo is reported to have said the proposals were unacceptable to the Palestinians. Peace negotiators said Mr Clinton's deal was identical to Israel's blueprint for ending the violence. Yesterday Mr Clinton called for a "long leap" from both sides to close their 52-year divide.

MID EAST PEACE TALKS SUDDENLY CANCELLED

Hopes for progress on Middle East peace were dashed today when the Palestinians cancelled a meeting with the Israelis. Talks had been planned with Israeli ex-chief of staff Amnon Lipkin-Shahak. Yesterday in Gaza both sides agreed to continue trying to close the gap over key issues ` sovereignty of Jerusalem and the future of Palestinian refugees. Those talks were led by Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat & former Israeli premier Shimon Peres.

LOCKERBIE DEFENCE LAWYERS MAKE CASE

Defence lawyers have begun making their final submissions to the judges hearing the case of the two Libyans accused of the Lockerbie bombing. Bill Taylor QC defending one of the men said the Crown had not proved that an explosive was put onto the Pan Am jet at Luqa Airport on Malta. He said it would be unsafe for the two men who say Palestinians were to blame to be convicted. Earlier this week the Crown dropped some of the charges against the men.

US ENVOY "CANCELS MID EAST PEACE TRIP"

senior Palestinian official. Yesterday Mr Ross had said he was delaying his visit until Thursday. There was no further explanation nor immediate further comment from any of the three sides in the peace process. The move appeared to be a setback for President Clinton's hopes of brokering a peace deal before leaving office.

SEX ATTACKER TO BE DETAINED FOR LIFE

A sex attacker has been detained for life after a judge warned that he was a danger to women. Lee Collins 19 from East Kilbride had admitted attacking a young woman with sexual intent. He also admitted two charges of breach of the peace which involved following young women in the town last year. At the High Court in Edinburgh the judge Lord Nimmo Smith said there was no basis for predicting when Collins might be regarded as safe.
