PALESTINIAN AGENTS "LINKED TO BUS BOMB"

A man arrested for a pipe bomb attack on a Tel Aviv bus was equipped by Palestinian military intelligence agents Israeli security sources say. They said the 25-year-old Jordanian citizen was recruited by agents from the Palestinian-ruled town of Nablus. Fourteen people were injured one seriously when two pipe bombs hidden in a duffle bag exploded on December 28 Palestinian officials were not available for comment.

Syria has refused a formal request to hand over documents which defence lawyers in the Lockerbie bombing trial claim could help clear two Libyans. The trial resumed at Camp Zeist in the Netherlands with the lawyers saying they were closing their case. The defence claims the documents contained crucial evidence linking the 1988 bombing to militant Palestinians. Talks between Syria & British Embassy officials failed to yield any success.

FINANCIER HELD IN BOLLYWOOD MAFIA PROBE

Police in Bombay have arrested a top Indian film executive in connection with alleged links to the underworld. Influential financier Bharat Shah a major backer of Bombay films is being held in custody until later this month. Police acted after listening to the contents of a secretly-recorded discussion involving a Pakistan-based suspected criminal PTI agency said. The co-producers of Mr Shah's latest Hindi film "On the Quiet Hush Hush" have already been remanded in custody.

YOUNG GIRL DIES IN WATERFALL ACCIDENT

A young British girl has died following an accident at a waterfall in South Africa the Foreign Office has said. The accident is understood to have happened yesterday at Lisbon Falls. The Foreign Office is still investigating. A spokesman was unable to release any details about the girl. Last Wednesday Cara Weaver 14 from Dorset was killed in an accident involving a cable car mechanism on Table Mountain near cape Town.

NO MORE EVIDENCE AT THE LOCKERBIE TRIAL

The Lockerbie trial has resumed in the Netherlands after an adjournment of more than a month ` with a shock announcement by the defence. In a dramatic development defence teams have said they will offer no further evidence in the trial which has so far lasted more than eight months. The defence had been thwarted in their efforts by the Syrian government who failed to send information for the case It is expected the case will now conclude before the end of January.

BAE EXPECTS "SIZEABLE UK REDUNDANCIES"

Aerospace firm BAE Systems says it plans "sizeable redundancies" in its UK workforce in the defence area. It said staff were likely to be cut because orders for Hawk trainers & MoD business were lower than expected. Unions fear 2 000 jobs could go with works at Brough near Hull & Woodford Greater Manchester hardest hit. The firm said it hoped cuts could be achieved through voluntary redundancy and transfers to other divisions.

PALESTINIANS REJECT CLINTON PEACE PLAN

The Palestinians have rejected US President Bill Clinton's proposals for peace in the Middle East reports say. Information minister Yasser Abed Rabbo is reported to have said the proposals were unacceptable to the Palestinians. Peace negotiators said Mr Clinton's deal was identical to Israel's blueprint for ending the violence. Yesterday Mr Clinton called for a "long leap" from both sides to close their 52-year divide.

PALESTINIAN GIRLS INHALE TEAR GAS

About 100 Palestinian schoolgirls inhaled tear gas after Israeli troops fired the cannisters near a school in the West Bank it has been reported. The gas cloud spread through the school during a battle in Silat al-Dahr in which four Palestinian men were also reported injured by live bullets. In al-Khader two Palestinians were injured during a clash with troops. Meanwhile talks continue behind the scenes to try to reach a peace deal.
