IVORY COAST GOVERNMENT REGAINS CONTROL

An attempted coup in the west African state of Ivory Coast is said to be over Forces loyal to the government have reportedly regained control of the national radio station following heavy gunfire in the main city Abidjan. Unidentified rebels earlier broadcast a statement saying they controlled both the television & radio & gunfire was reported near the President's home. The government said two loyal officers were killed & 15 rebels captured.

URANIUM SHELLS USED ON UK FIRING RANGES

Uranium-tipped shells which have been linked to cancer in veterans of the Balkan conflicts have been used on UK firing ranges it has been confirmed. The Ministry of Defence said the weapons were used on ranges at Eskmeals in Cumbria & Kirkcudbright Dumfries. It said monitoring by the Health & Safety Executive found no evidence of risks to troops civilians or wildlife. The weapons were fired into the Solway Firth from the Scottish site.

SPAIN

Many abattoir staff in central and northwest Spain have gone on strike to protest against measures introduced to counter the BSE crisis. The workers in the Castilla y Leon are unhappy at the requirement of health certificates for cattle. PORTUGAL Train drivers began a 48-hour strike on Monday to protest against working conditions. Portuguese Rail (CP) is to provide alternative transport to minimize the effects of the strike & is making a total of 206 buses available.

Two people who were trapped in their van after it crashed into a lorry this morning are being taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. SMUGGLERA man has been jailed for five years for trying to smuggle 22 kilos of cannabis into Scotland. Gerhardus Bester 33 was caught at Edinburgh Airport last September. TECHNOLOGY Mainetti the UK's largest manufacturer of telecommunications ducting systems will announce a £1.9m expansion at its Hawick headquarters tomorrow. It will created up to 100 extra jobs.

CHAOS "MAY DETER PASSENGERS FOR GOOD"

Researchers are warning that the chaos on the railways could deter some people from travelling by train for years. A confidential document obtained by the BBC also suggests that some people will even desert the railways for good. The paper was commissioned by Railtrack and the train operating companies. The development comes on the day that rail services were scheduled to be back to normal. Many new timetables may now not be published until next Monday.

GOODYEAR AXES 500 JOBS AS DEAL REJECTED

Tyre firm Goodyear is shedding 500 jobs at its Wolverhampton plant after the workforce voted to reject a pay deal. Staff at the plant voted 4 to 1 against the deal which could have saved 250 jobs but involved taking a pay cut. Unions had recommended accepting the deal aimed at raising productivity. After the vote Goodyear said it had "no other option" but to axe the jobs. Building a future for the plant was now "extremely difficult" it added.

UK CEMENT FIRM FACING FRENCH TAKEOVER

French building materials giant Lafarge has confirmed it has agreed a £3.1bn takeover of UK-based cement group Blue Circle Industries. Blue Circle shares surged after news of the recommended offer set to create the world's largest cement producer. The deal comes less than a year after Lafarge tried & failed to snap up Blue Circle with a hostile takeover bid Blue Circle employs 18 637 staff of whom 4 779 are based in the UK.

TWO HELD AFTER STAR CONFRONTS INTRUDERS

Police have arrested a second suspect in connection with an alleged burglary at footballer Duncan Ferguson's home. The Everton striker suffered minor injuries in a scuffle with two intruders at his house near Ormskirk Lancs early yesterday morning. A 21-year-old man with head injuries was taken to hospital & is now under arrest. A second man fled the scene. The suspect arrested today is described as a 23-year-old local man.

THEFT Supermarket firm Asda is offering a reward after one of its petrol tankers carrying £27 000 worth of fuel was stolen from the Vopak terminal in Grays Essex. SOCCER Manchester United is cutting 48 jobs at its Old Trafford merchandising operation halving the workforce. The company will strike deals with firms around the world to develop its goods.
