TRAIN FIRM PLEDGES TO GET BACK ON TRACK

Scotrail insists it is confident it can win back customers lost in the headache after the Hatfield accident. A report commissioned by Railtrack from market research company MORI indicates it could be up to five years before customers return to the trains. But Scotrail says the Glasgow-Edinburgh line which was most seriously affected in recent months will return to four trains per hour later this week. Bosses argue that passenger levels are expected to recover quickly.

BANK MANAGER ADMITS EMBEZZLING £40 000

A bank manager has been convicted of embezzling more than £40 000 from the Clydesdale Bank. Charles Young from Crewe Terrace in Edinburgh fled to England but turned himself in to police two weeks later. Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard how Young who pleaded guilty used his position of responsibility to authorise overdrafts for invented accounts. Sentence on Young has been deferred so that background reports can be taken into consideration.

DIPLOMAT DISCUSSES SAUDI-JAILED BRITONS

The head of the Diplomatic Service has raised the case of five Britons being held in Saudi Arabia on alcohol-related offences with senior Saudi officials. During a three-day visit Sir John Kerr met the governor of the Saudi capital Riyadh and the Saudi foreign minister. Alcohol is banned in the Muslim kingdom but it is not clear if the five men have been charged. However they could face imprisonment flogging or deportation.

GOODYEAR AXES 500 JOBS AS DEAL REJECTED

Tyre firm Goodyear is shedding 500 jobs at its Wolverhampton plant after the workforce voted to reject a pay deal. Staff at the plant voted 4 to 1 against the deal which could have saved 250 jobs but involved taking a pay cut. Unions had recommended accepting the deal aimed at raising productivity. After the vote Goodyear said it had "no other option" but to axe the jobs. Building a future for the plant was now "extremely difficult" it added.

STEELWORKERS BALLOTED OVER JOBS FEARS

Workers at Britain's biggest steel firm are to be balloted on industrial action over fears of job losses. The Iron & Steel Trades Confederation wants assurances that planned cuts by Corus will not mean compulsory redundancies at its Scunthorpe factory. Members will be balloted but the ISTC said "real progress" had been made in day-long talks with management. Last year Corus axed thousands of jobs and the ISTC fears a plant could close.

BRANSON CONSIDERS A RIVAL TO LOTTERY

Sir Richard Branson's People's Lottery group is considering setting up a rival to the National Lottery after failing to win the seven-year franchise. Chief executive Simon Burridge said he was also considering an appeal against the Lottery Commission's decision to award the franchise to Camelot. The commission had originally indicated the Branson bid would win he added. He said any rival game would be "not- for-profit" & benefit good causes.

METRO MASSAGE TO SOOTHE SUBWAY STRESS

The Paris subway system is treating its passengers to a free massage to counter the stress of delays & staff strikes. The initiative in place at four stations also involves giving away health foods like seaweed crackers & green tea and putting up bright signs. "We live in a city where there are lots of nervous & stressed out people " explained masseur Christophe Basile. The massages are set to add up to 10 minutes to people's journey times.

TRADE UNION LEARNING PROJECTS GET BOOST

Twelve trade union learning projects in Scotland are to share a £500 000 boost enterprise & lifelong learning minister Wendy Alexander has announced. Innovative lifelong learning projects have been invited to bid for the cash in the Scottish Union Learning Fund that totals £1.2m over three years. One of the successful bids the Rosyth Joint Trade Unions project led by the AEEU received £38 384. Ms Alexander stressed ministers were fully committed to training.

TEENAGERS HELD IN DAMILOLA MURDER PROBE

Two teenagers have been arrested in connection with the death of 10-year- old Damilola Taylor. Damilola was stabbed & died in the stairwell of a housing estate in Peckham south London in November. Scotland Yard said two teenagers aged 13 & 14 were being questioned in south London. They have not been arrested before. Thirteen people have already been arrested & released in the inquiry.
