YEMEN BOMB SUSPECTS "ARE TO BE CHARGED"

The two suspects in the bomb attack on the USS Cole destroyer will be charged on Tuesday predict Yemeni sources. If convicted the pair could face public execution by firing squad. Seventeen US sailors were killed & 39 hurt when a boat packed with explosives was detonated as the destroyer refueled in Yemen on October 12. American officials have said the attack was probably the work of Islamic extremists.

Senior Israeli & Palestinian security officials & CIA director George Tenet are due to meet in Egypt in a new bid to curb over three months of violence. Israel is calling on the Palestinians to re-arrest Islamic militants freed from jail when the violence erupted. They also want security co-operation on the ground to resume. However with hopes of an overall peace deal fading observers say agreement on security issues may be hard to find.

IRAN AMENDS LAW ON WOMEN'S STUDY ABROAD

Iran's parliament the Majlis has passed a controversial bill allowing unmarried Iranian women access to state grants to study in foreign countries. Before it passes into law the bill has to be examined by an Islamic committee to ensure it does not contradict the tenets of Islam or the constitution. The new bill amends a law from 1985 which denied unmarried women state funds to pursue their studies abroad. The bill has been a bone of contention between reformists & conservatives.

US AND ISRAEL SIGN WORLD COURT TREATY

The US & Israel signed a treaty to create an international war crimes court as the midnight deadline neared. The court would be the first permanent institution to try charges such as genocide & crimes against humanity. Sixty countries need to ratify the treaty before it can come into existence ` so far 27 have. The US hesitated before deciding to sign the treaty which has been criticised by American conservatives.

TALKS BID TO EASE MID-EAST TENSIONS

Attempts to ease tensions between Palestinians & Israelis have been aired in talks between Yasser Arafat and an Israeli cabinet minister. The Palestinian leader met Tel Aviv's Transport Minister Amnon Lipkin-Shahak at his headquarters in Gaza City. Israel has complained that the Palestinians are not doing enough to halt attacks on Israelis. The Palestinians want travel curbs lifted before they co-operate.

TWO PALESTINIAN POLICE DIE IN FIGHTING

Fierce gun-battles have raged in the West Bank & Gaza Strip killing two Palestinian policemen near the West Bank town of Tulkarm. The Israeli army said it had come under fire in a dozen locations. The Palestinians said a villager had died after being shot by Jewish settlers & a four-year-old boy had also been killed in shelling in Nablus. Yasser Arafat's Fatah group urged more protests today on its 36th anniversary.

PALESTINIAN AGENTS "LINKED TO BUS BOMB"

A man arrested for a pipe bomb attack on a Tel Aviv bus was equipped by Palestinian military intelligence agents Israeli security sources say. They said the 25-year-old Jordanian citizen was recruited by agents from the Palestinian-ruled town of Nablus. Fourteen people were injured one seriously when two pipe bombs hidden in a duffle bag exploded on December 28 Palestinian officials were not available for comment.

ARAFAT MEETS ISRAELI OFFICIALS IN GAZA

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has met senior Israeli officials in Gaza in an attempt to restart peace talks. Mr Arafat saw Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami & a senior aide of Prime Minister Ehud Barak. Israel said the aim was to resume peace negotiations shattered by 11 weeks of Israeli-Palestinian violence. PALESTINIANS REJECT CLINTON PEACE PLAN

The Palestinians have rejected US President Bill Clinton's proposals for peace in the Middle East reports say. Information minister Yasser Abed Rabbo is reported to have said the proposals were unacceptable to the Palestinians. Peace negotiators said Mr Clinton's deal was identical to Israel's blueprint for ending the violence. Yesterday Mr Clinton called for a "long leap" from both sides to close their 52-year divide.
