PINOCHET FAILS TO SHOW FOR HEALTH TESTS

Former Chilean leader Augusto Pinochet is facing arrest after he failed to turn up for court-ordered medical tests General Pinochet was due to present himself at a military hospital in Santiago at 2pm British time. The tests were ordered by Judge Juan Guzman who is investigating the death or disappearance of 75 opponents of military rule during the 1970s. The general's lawyers had warned that he would not attend.

YOUNG GIRL DIES IN WATERFALL ACCIDENT

A young British girl has died following an accident at a waterfall in South Africa the Foreign Office has said. The accident is understood to have happened yesterday at Lisbon Falls. The Foreign Office is still investigating. A spokesman was unable to release any details about the girl. Last Wednesday Cara Weaver 14 from Dorset was killed in an accident involving a cable car mechanism on Table Mountain near cape Town.

LOCKERBIE TRIAL DEFENCE TEAM IN SETBACK

Syria has refused a formal request to hand over documents which defence lawyers in the Lockerbie bombing trial claim could help clear two Libyans. The trial resumed at Camp Zeist in the Netherlands with the lawyers saying they were closing their case. The defence claims the documents contained crucial evidence linking the 1988 bombing to militant Palestinians. Talks between Syria & British Embassy officials failed to yield any success.

The Indonesian government is introducing self-rule for its 26 provinces in a move which it hopes will counteract separatist disturbances. IRAN PUSHES FOR NEW PERCEPTION OF GULF

Iranian president Mohammad Khatami says the current global perception of the Gulf region solely as the world's main source of oil needs to be revised. That perception had led to the arrival of foreign troops wars destructive crises & a mono-cultural economy Mr Khatami told a conference in Teheran. The Gulf states should work to promote a new status for the region he said. Until its image changed the presence of foreign troops & destructive local conflicts would undermine stability.

MORE SHIPMAN CHARGES UNLIKELY SAYS DPP

The Director of Public Prosecutions has said no more charges are likely to be brought against Dr Harold Shipman convicted of killing 15 of his patients The announcement follows the release of a study suggesting he probably killed 240 patients and possibly up to 297. The Department of Health examined his patient death rates from 1974 to 1998. These suggest 297 more of his patients died than could have been expected; 236 of the "excess" fatalities died at home

CHINA More than 20 coal miners are reported to have been trapped in a flooded pit in the Guanxi Zhuang southern region since Friday. INDIA At least 12 people were killed and six others seriously injured when a gas tanker exploded into flames after hitting a truck in a village near the northern city of Kanpur reports say.
