TURKISH PRISONERS DIE IN JAIL BLAZE

At least eight people have died in a fire at a high-security Turkish jail. The rioting is reported to have occurred after police moved into the prison to transfer some troublesome inmates. A hospial source said 17 people were also injured in the incident involving rebel Kurdish prisoners. He said it was unclear if the dead were prisoners or members of the security forces.

TWO FOUND DEAD AFTER LIGHT PLANE CRASH

Two bodies have been recovered from the wreckage of a light aircraft which vanished from radar screens. The Piper Cherokee was found in four feet of water off the Southport coast after disappearing over Lancashire. The plane belonged to a private flying school at the Woodvale Aerodrome on Merseyside. The chief flying instructor was one of the victims. The two people on board the plane were on a test flight.

SINN FEIN LEADER DEFENDS COMMONS VISIT

Gerry Adams has brushed aside the angry reaction to a planned meeting with Labour MPs Jeremy Corbyn & Tony Benn. The Sinn Fein president said he had been several times before & each time briefed a wide range of people. He denied the Commons visit was insensitive coming immediately after Monday's huge IRA explosives find. And he said he resented British politicians visiting Ireland & telling people what to do.

HEADMASTER "MURDERED HELPING PUPIL"

Headmaster Philip Lawrence was murdered in an act of "bravado & adrenalin" as he tried to protect a pupil the Old Bailey has been told. "It was in seeking to protect one of them that he died " prosecuting counsel John Bevan told the court. A boy of 16 is accused of Mr Lawrence's murder & of conspiring with another to cause grievous bodily harm to a boy. Mr Lawrence 48 was stabbed outside St George's RC school in west London.

BOY WAS STRESSED AFTER HEAD'S STABBING

A schoolboy involved in a feud which allegedly led to headmaster Philip Lawrence's murder has since received psychiatric help the Old Bailey heard. The 14-year-old agreed with the defence that he had been the first to throw a punch in the "tragic story". A 16-year-old youth has denied murdering Mr Lawrence last December. Both he & a second defendant aged 15 deny conspiracy & wounding charges against the boy giving evidence

TERRORISM RAID VICTIM WAS NOT ARMED

Scotland Yard has confirmed that the suspect killed in an anti-terrorism raid on Monday was not armed. Sinn Fein vice-president Pat Doherty said the security forces had operated a "shoot first & then make up the facts" policy. The Police Complaints Authority has launched an inquiry into the shooting of IRA suepect Dermot O'Neill 27. The move was welcomed by Irish Prime Minister John Bruton.

STALKING LAWS COULD BE IN PLACE BY MAY

New laws to outlaw stalking could be on the statute book before the next General Election. Home Secretary Michael Howard said he hoped such legislation could be introduced by next May. His comments followed yesterday's call for legislation by a judge after the conviction on assault charges of unemployed Clarence Morris. Morris subjected his 20-year-old female victim to continual harassment.
