EXERCISE AWARDS LAUNCHED TO CUT OBESITY

An attempt to reduce the number of overweight children in Scotland has been introduced into Lothian schools Sports Minister Allan Wilson said 14000 primary school children in West Lothian were the first to test the scheme. Sportscotland has committed £2.8m in lottery funds to the project in a bid to reduce the estimated 15% of children who are overweight. The programme will provide incentives and resources which will enable children to enjoy physical activity.

CAMPAIGN URGES CHILD CAR SEAT SAFETY

A national campaign is being launched to press home to parents the importance of fitting child car seats properly. The Government campaign will be backed by radio adverts & leaflets offering tips on buying & fitting seats. Research shows the best protection for young children is putting them in seats appropriate for their weight & size. Estimates suggest three children aged under four died as unrestrained passengers in 1999 & 309 were injured

BLACKMAN SUSPECT FACING VIOLENCE CHARGE

A Japanese property developer suspected of involvement in the disappearance of British bar hostess Lucie Blackman has been charged with a new crime. Joji Obara 48 is accused of sexual violence resulting in the death of an Australian woman in 1992. Obara already faces five charges of raping Japanese & foreign women. Miss Blackman 22 of Sevenoaks in Kent had been working as a bar hostess when she went missing in July.

Interior Minister Jaime Mayor Oreja has called for a Europe-wide arrest warrant which would make the extradition of suspects unnecessary. He said the warrant would end the "limitations" which hindered countries in the fight against crime. GEORGIA Tbilisi & Ankara have agreed to remove anti-personnel mines from their joint border & not to use them for border protection in the future. Georgian Defence Minister Davit Tevzadze said Georgia & Turkey were working to clear the mines.

HINDI COMMUNITY APPEAL FOR QUAKE AID

Glasgow's Hindi Community is collecting money & clothes to send to the Indian region of Gujarat devastated by Friday's earthquake. It is now estimated as many as 20 000 people have died & still more are trapped after an earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale. The Scottish Asian Action Committee has asked Scots to help the relief effort. An international rescue team based in Grangemouth has also gone out to help look for survivors in the rubble.

IRAQI CANCER GIRL FLIES HOME TO BAGHDAD

An Iraqi girl brought to Scotland for leukaemia treatment by Glasgow Kelvin MP George Galloway has begun her trip home to Baghdad. Six-year-old Mariam Hamza has received further care in America since August last year. Mr Galloway's wife Dr Amineh Abu-Zayyad said Mariam was happy well & learning to swim. Mr Galloway provoked a storm of controversy when he first brought Mariam to Glasgow in 1998.

CHECK-UP FOR SCOTTISH CASUALTY WARDS

Waiting times in every Scottish casualty ward are being independently assessed to check performance. The "Casualty Watch" survey by Scottish health councils is an attempt to verify the Executive's pledges to improve accident & emergency waiting times. The sex age time of arrival reason for admission & treatment plan of all patients in casualty as at 4.30pm yesterday are being processed. Similar UK-wide surveys found some English patients waiting over 24 hours.

LORDS MAY HALT MORNING AFTER PILL SALES

Over-the-counter sales of the morning- after pill could be stopped immediately if peers back a motion in the Lords. Family values campaigner Baroness Young is leading calls to back the motion today which would halt sales of the emergency contraception in pharmacies. She fears for the safety of girls if it is available without prescription. But the Department of Health said it was a "safe & effective emergency form of hormonal contraception".

The chief executive of Sony has voiced his fears over internet software which allows people to share music without paying copyright fees. Nobuyuki Idei told the World Economic Forum that it represented a danger to legitimate companies. Microsoft founder Bill Gates said there had been an "explosion" of young people using computers to talk & share music The future of the web is being debated at the Forum in Davos Switzerland.
