USA Miami couple who disciplined their

11-year-old son by ripping off his toenails dropping a sledgehammer on his feet & making him eat his own vomit have been imprisoned for life. SPAINA law has come into force which may lead to the expulsion of around 30 000 illegal residents in a bid to stem the tide of illegal immigration. JAPAN Economics Minister Fukushiro Nukaga has become the latest cabinet member to resign after admitting taking around £70 000 from an insurance company involved in a scandal.

HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER SPARED JAIL SENTENCE

A hit-and-run driver who drove for over two miles with his victim's body caught in the sunroof has been sentenced to 160 hours' community service. Tadeusz Rogala 74 was hit by Craig Gant's car in Wakefield in 1999. Gant admitted careless driving failing to stop & driving without insurance. Magistrates in Wakefield also banned Gant 29 from driving for four years. They said they accepted he had been "traumatised" by the crash.

LONDON MAY BEAR BRUNT OF ING JOB LOSSES

The Dutch banking & insurance group ING is set to axe about 1 100 jobs from its investment banking operations outside the US. London is expected to bear the brunt of the job cuts says the Financial Times. ING is keen to cut costs & raise profits at investment bank ING Barings. Dutch rival ABN Amro is tipped to buy most of ING's US investment banking arm The two moves could reportedly reduce ING's workforce by at least 2 500.

THREE IRANIAN AGENTS FACE DEATH PENALTY

Three Iranian intelligence agents have been sentenced to death & five given life terms for murdering dissidents in 1998 news agency IRNA has reported. A closed military court acquitted three of the 18 defendants & gave the rest jail terms of up to 10 years. The murder victims were a secular nationalist leader his wife & two liberal writers. The intelligence ministry denied top officials had authorised the killings.

THAI POLICE PROBE MURDER OF BRITISH MAN

Police in Thailand are investigating the murder of a British man whose body was discovered in a hotel in the country the Foreign Office has said. The victim was found in the Kanchanaburi province on Saturday after flying into the country last week. The Sun newspaper said a couple were in custody after admitting to the murder. A Foreign Office official said the man's name would not be released until relatives had been informed.
