UK BUSINESS CHIEF WARNS OF RECESSION

The chairman of one of the UK's biggest companies fears the world is in danger of talking itself into global recession Sir Martin Laing of John Laing Construction spoke at the annual gathering of government ministers & leading international companies. The World Economic Forum is meeting in the Swiss ski resort of Davos. Sir Martin spoke after news of a slow- down in the US economy. The dollar/euro relationship is to be discussed today.

FURTHER TREMORS SHAKE INDIAN QUAKE CITY

Fresh tremors have struck the Indian city of Bhuj which was devastated by an earthquake on Friday. The confirmed death toll in Gujurat state stands at just over 6 000 but officials believe 20 000 may have died. Over 14 500 people have been hurt & 125 000 are "not accounted for" though thousands of survivors many of whom are homeless are thought to have fled. A 69-strong UK team of rescuers has pulled one survivor from rubble in Bhuj

QUEEN REMEMBERS VICTIMS OF HOLOCAUST

The Queen has remembered the victims of the Holocaust & those killed in the India earthquake in prayers at a church service at Sandringham in Norfolk. She was joined by the Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen Mother for the service at St Mary Magdalene church on the estate. Princess Margaret who was still too unwell to attend was also remembered. After nearly slipping at the church two weeks ago the Queen Mother walked down the steps with one hand on the rail.

MANDELSON LET GOVERNMENT DOWN ` SHORT

International Development Secretary Clare Short has accused Peter Mandelson of letting the Government down. She told BBC Radio 4 that he had quit as Northern Ireland Secretary because "he has got problems with the truth". It was "very sad" that Mr Mandelson had penned "acres of newsprint" since his resignation she said adding that he had also "let himself down". "Peter Mandelson is over " Ms Short told The World This Weekend.

LABOUR MSP REFUTES CARE DEAL CLIMBDOWN

The SNP has been quick to respond after a Labour MSP argued his party had not done a U-turn over care for old people. The Nationalists have used the remarks to pile further pressure on ministers to spell out the commitment to funding free personal care for all. The intervention comes from Ochil MSP Dr Richard Simpson. He insists the statement promising to bring forward "proposals" for free personal care is exactly the same as the amendment he originally tabled.

FIRST MEMORIAL DAY TO MARK HOLOCAUST

Political & religious leaders are to attend a service to mark Britain's first Holocaust Memorial Day. It is being held exactly 56 years after Allied troops liberated the Auschwitz Nazi death camp at the end of WWII. Memorial days are also being marked in Germany Italy & Sweden. Tonight's service of remembrance is taking place at Methodist Central Hall in Westminster. It will be attended by survivors of the Holocaust.

SICK TROOPS SENT TO PRIVATE HOSPITALS

Some troops are being sent to private hospitals for treatment because of a shortage of medical personnel in the armed forces it has emerged. The Ministry of Defence has signed contracts with Bupa & the Nuffield Hospital Group to provide treatment. Figures last July revealed a shortfall of over 25% in the number of medical personnel an MoD spokesman said. Only 6 153 of the 8 543 defence medical services posts were filled at that time

Judges overruled Government objections and allowed publication once the book's disclosures were "in the public domain" Richard Tomlinson was imprisoned for breaching the Official Secrets Act in 1997 & now lives in Italy.
