AUSCHWITZ EVENT REMEMBERS THE HOLOCAUST

About 1 000 Auschwitz survivors & relatives of victims have gathered at the former death camp in Poland to mark the 56th anniversary of its liberation. The participants included young Poles and Germans who laid flowers & said prayers at a memorial to the 1.5m people who died in the camp. There were no Jewish people present as it is the Sabbath. The event commemorated Holocaust Day which is also being marked in Britain.

The capital was chosen as the focus for the nation's commemoration of Britain's first Holocaust Day. A small crowd watched the release of 600 blue balloons at the west end of Princes Street Gardens. Each bore a message from some of the schoolchildren who have been visiting the Anne Frank Exhibition in Edinburgh. Later First Minister Henry McLeish & Scottish Secretary Helen Liddle were taking part in a special ceremony at the Usher Hall.

SPANISH SAY BRITAIN SHOULD PAY FOR BSE

A Spanish farmers' union has said that Britain is responsible for cases of mad cow disease in other European countries and should be made to pay compensation. Local media reported that the head of the Asaja union Pedro Barato said the UK had been irresponsible to continue to export feed containing animal meal. Britain banned animal meal from cattle feed in 1988 because of BSE but carried on exporting it to Europe he said. The UK was at fault because it allowed EU farmers to buy the feed he added.

LET'S HELP ABOLISH POVERTY ` CHANCELLOR

Chancellor Gordon Brown has pledged Labour will target priority groups with a series of tax credits aimed at raising their incomes. Poorer pensioners & families with young children would be key targets he told a Fabian Society conference. Labour's vision was one of opportunity for all he said. "Let us become the generation that abolishes child & pensioner poverty " said Mr Brown.

NEW EFFORT AGAINST BULLYING IN SCHOOLS

Bullying in schools must be brought out from the shadows if it is to be tackled effectively a conference for parents will hear today. The Anti-Bullying Network's national conference will be told that children must be encouraged to be more open about the problem. It is being held at South Lanarkshire Council's offices in Hamilton.

NEW WORKPLACE GUIDELINES FOR NHS STAFF

Health minister Susan Deacon has announced plans to make NHS managers deliver family-friendly policies & crack down on workplace bullying. The minister explained six new guidelines to improve working conditions for NHS employees during a conference in Edinburgh. The guidelines included proposals to improve training & strengthen equal opportunities policies. They seek to develop facilities for unions & monitor staff performance.

QUEEN REMEMBERS VICTIMS OF HOLOCAUST

The Queen has remembered the victims of the Holocaust & those killed in the India earthquake in prayers at a church service at Sandringham in Norfolk. She was joined by the Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen Mother for the service at St Mary Magdalene church on the estate. Princess Margaret who was still too unwell to attend was also remembered. After nearly slipping at the church two weeks ago the Queen Mother walked down the steps with one hand on the rail.

EMPTY PROMISES JIBE AFTER OAP CLIMBDOWN

Opposition parties insist pensioners have been offered empty promises by the Scottish Executive over long-term care. The Scottish National Party & the Conservatives are keeping up pressure after a climdown by minsiters. Labour's Tom McCabe outlined plans for free personal care ` just minutes ahead of an expected Holyrood defeat. Meanwhile Lib Dem Deputy First Minister Jim Wallace urged all MSPs to stick to their principles and stressed free care will be provided.

REID HAS TALKS WITH N IRELAND MINISTERS

New Northern Ireland Secretary John Reid has had his first formal meeting with First Minister David Trimble & Deputy First Minister Seamus Mallon. After the hour-long talks at Stormont Mr Trimble said there was "a window of opportunity" to resolve decommissioning and policing issues before an election. It would not take "much more progress" to "bed down" the peace deal he added. But Mr Mallon was less upbeat saying that "very substantial" work was needed

QUAKE LEAVES OVER 450 CHILDREN TRAPPED

More than 450 children are feared trapped under the rubble of school buildings following the earthquake which hit the Indian state of Gujarat. The worst collapse was in Bhuj where around 400 children had gathered to celebrate India's Republic Day. A school in Ahmedabad where 60 children were taking a physics exam collapsed and a third school in Bachao was hit. Most schools & offices had been shut at the time because of Republic Day.

GOVERNMENT URGED TO RAISE CARE-LEVELS

The Government is being urged to give all elderly people across the UK the same level of care which has now been promised to pensioners in Scotland. The Labour-led Scottish Executive has said that nursing care for people at home or living in residential homes would be made available free of charge. Director-General of Age Concern Gordon Lichman welcomed the Scottish decision But he said Westminster would now have to seriously consider following suit.

Fans of Inverness Caledonian Thistle are going to the polls to decide on whether they want to change the name of the football club. It was formed seven years ago with the merger of Inverness Caledonian & Inverness Thistle. Supporters attending the Highland side's third round Scottish Cup tie against Ayr United will be handed ballot papers on the way into the park. Most supporters are believed to be against changing the club's name.
