BRITON IN US AWARDED CUSTODY OF BABY

A British man in the US has won custody of his eight-month-old son who was left for dead in a public toilet by his mother shortly after being born. The woman Kelly Angell was given a 17-month suspended jail sentence after abandoning the baby in May last year. Her 20-year-old boyfriend Graeme Clifton had applied for custody at a court in Boston Massachusetts. The judge's custody decision was supported by Ms Angell's family.

EGYPTIAN AUTHOR JAILED FOR BLASPHEMY

An Egyptian author has been sentenced to three years in prison with hard labour for offending Islam. A state security court in Cairo also ordered that all books & publications by Salah-Eddine Mohsen be confiscated to suppress his "fanatic ideas". Mohsen received a six-month sentence last year but the prosecution appealed saying it was too lenient. He had written that the Koran Islam's holy book is outdated.

AUSCHWITZ EVENT REMEMBERS THE HOLOCAUST

About 1 000 Auschwitz survivors & relatives of victims have gathered at the former death camp in Poland to mark the 56th anniversary of its liberation. The participants included young Poles and Germans who laid flowers & said prayers at a memorial to the 1.5m people who died in the camp. There were no Jewish people present as it is the Sabbath. The event commemorated Holocaust Day which is also being marked in Britain.

EVENTS MARK 100 YEARS SINCE VERDI DEATH

Italy is starting a year of events to mark the 100th anniversary of the death of opera composer Giuseppe Verdi. As well as celebrating his music Italy will remember the central role Verdi played in uniting the country. His music will be performed in other countries throughout the weekend. The Pope has paid tribute to the composer describing his works as "expressing great values linked to the Christian liturgy".

BLAIR "WILL NOT TAKE PART IN TV DEBATE"

The Prime Minister's official spokesman says there will be no TV debates in the forthcoming general election campaign. Tory leader William Hague & Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy agreed to take part in two BBC/ITV debates. In recent days both oppostion leaders challenged Tony Blair to join them. Labour was thought to have had concerns that a debate could lead to legal challenges from smaller parties not invited to participate.

ONE DEAD AFTER CAR BLAST IN NORTH SPAIN

A navy cook has been killed & two passers-by have been injured in a car bomb blast in northern Spain. No group admitted planting the bomb but reports said it bore the hallmarks of Basque separatist group Eta. The bomb exploded as the man started his car near a military compound in the Basque city of San Sebastian. Eta has admitted being behind the deaths of 23 people since it ended a 14-month truce in December 1999.

PORTUGAL Two people were killed & four others including a mother & her two daughters were missing after a heavy storm caused floods & mudslides in the north of the country. CHILE Former dictator General Augusto Pinochet 85 has been discharged from the Military Hospital in Santiago after suffering a slight stroke on Thursday.

CHILE Former dictator Augusto Pinochet has been admitted to a hospital in Santiago as an emergency case after feeling unwell. He was taken by helicopter from his home in Los Boldos.

GATES GIVES £65m FOR ANTI-AIDS VACCINE

Microsoft boss Bill Gates has pledged #65m to help develop an anti-Aids vaccine which scientists say should be ready within 10 years. The software tycoon's charity the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has said it hopes to encourage others to back the International Aids Vaccine Initiative. The IAVI is seeking over £360m to fund development work until 2007. This will include trials of a new vaccine against HIV in Kenya.

C&A LEAVING HIGH STREET AFTER 80 YEARS

The doors are set to begin closing on one of the best-known names on the High Street ` C&A. The clothing store is shutting 58 of its UK outlets after nearly 80 years of trading having fallen victim to changing consumer demands. The Dutch-owned group announced last June it was pulling out of the UK after losing £250m in the previous five years Its remaining few stores will close over the coming months.
