QUAKE LEAVES OVER 450 CHILDREN TRAPPED

More than 450 children are feared trapped under the rubble of school buildings following the earthquake which hit the Indian state of Gujarat. The worst collapse was in Bhuj where around 400 children had gathered to celebrate India's Republic Day. A school in Ahmedabad where 60 children were taking a physics exam collapsed and a third school in Bachao was hit. Most schools & offices had been shut at the time because of Republic Day.

HOLOCAUST CEREMONIES CENTRE ON CAPITAL

The capital was chosen as the focus for the nation's commemoration of Britain's first Holocaust Day. A small crowd watched the release of 600 blue balloons at the west end of Princes Street Gardens. Each bore a message from some of the schoolchildren who have been visiting the Anne Frank Exhibition in Edinburgh. Later First Minister Henry McLeish & Scottish Secretary Helen Liddle were taking part in a special ceremony at the Usher Hall.

AGENDA AT WESTMINSTER

Chancellor Gordon Brown will take questions in the Commons which will be followed by a debate on fisheries. The committee stage of the Regulatory Reform Bill (Lords) will be debated by peers. The Lords will also discuss the marketing of British tourism to visitors from overseas.

BROWN ANNOUNCES REGIONAL ASSEMBLY PLANS

Chancellor Gordon Brown has announced the Government will create regional assemblies to monitor & improve economic performances. These plus "targeted" tax cuts would encourage higher levels of employment he said in a speech at Manchester Institute of Science & Technology. He said he was looking at a community tax credit to encourage investment. But the Tories said Labour wanted to create "unpopular regional bureacracy".

INVESTIGATION FOLLOWS BOY POND TRAGEDY

An investigation is under way into the death of a five-year-old boy who slipped on ice & fell into a pond. David Miller from Cowie had been playing with his friend at the time of the incident near his home. He was pulled from the pond but was pronounced dead on arrival at Stirling Royal Infirmary. Roger Vincent of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said it illustrated the danger of playing near water in freezing temperatures.

SAUDI ARABIAThe interior minister said

that allowing women to drive cars is out of the question. Responding to a media debate on the issue he told Al-Jazirah newspaper Saudi society "openly rejects" the idea GEORGIA Policeman Genri Kuprashvili hopes to get his name in the Guinness Book of Records after swimming a mile and a half with his arms & legs tied. Mr Kuprashvili told reporters he had checked first to be sure there was no category for "Dolphin swimming" which he says dates back to ancient Georgia.

ENGLISH ELDERLY "MAY COLONISE" FOR CARE

A former member of the Sutherland Commission has warned Scotland could be colonised by middle-class English if free care for the elderly is provided. Lord Lipsey who produced a report rejecting the recommendations said Scotland cannot afford free long term care for the elderly. He said "there will be a tremendous problem" with English people realising that they can get free personal care. He claimed they will "be waited on at the expense of the Scottish taxpayer".

NEW CHILDCARE PROPOSALS TO HELP PARENTS

An independent commission on childcare has called for parents to be offered "generous financial support" in the first three years of their child's life The Childcare Commission also proposes 10 000 new childcare centres across the whole of the UK. It suggests a tax credit of £150 a tax allowance & higher child benefit to finance personal or paid childcare. The commission under former minister Harriet Harman made a year-long study.
