WATER CANNONS TEAR GAS DISPERSE DEMO

Riot police have used water cannons tear gas & rubber pellets to disperse over 200 anti-capitalist demonstrators protesting at the World Economic Forum. The protesters were involved in a tense stand-off with police for an hour -and-a-half before the water cannons were turned on. One person was injured. The demonstrators were protesting at increasing globalisation in commerce. Some 3 000 business leaders are at the summit in Davos Switzerland.

AVOID TRAVEL TO ZANZIBAR ` BRITISH GOVT

The Foreign Office is advising Britons to avoid non-essential travel to Zanzibar after violent clashes between police & protesters on the islands. Britons already visiting the popular tourist destination should stay indoors as the situation is "unstable & unpredictable" the Foreign Office said Up to 15 people are reported to have died in clashes over disputed elections Violence has been worst on Pemba the smaller of Zanzibar's two main islands.

CONDOLENCES POUR IN AFTER INDIA QUAKE

Regional & world leaders have been sending messages of sympathy after an earthquake in India that is thought to have killed more than 1 000 people. Chinese leaders Zhu Rongji & Li Peng sent letters to their Indian opposite numbers. And Pakistani leader Pervez Musharraf said he shared their grief. China & Pakistan have had repeated disputes & confrontations with India. New US President George W Bush also said he was saddened by the quake & offered to send aid if requested.

Delays by many countries in following scientific guidance & acknowledging the problem were errors EU Food Safety Commissioner David Byrne said. It had raised concerns & frightened consumers he told delegates meeting in Davos Switzerland. Security is tight amid fears of anti- capitalist protests causing disruption.
