BRITON IN US AWARDED CUSTODY OF BABY

A British man in the US has won custody of his eight-month-old son who was left for dead in a public toilet by his mother shortly after being born. The woman Kelly Angell was given a 17-month suspended jail sentence after abandoning the baby in May last year. Her 20-year-old boyfriend Graeme Clifton had applied for custody at a court in Boston Massachusetts. The judge's custody decision was supported by Ms Angell's family.

BRITISH TEAM TO HELP IN QUAKE AFTERMATH

A 69-strong British rescue team has taken off for India to help in the aftermath of the earthquake. The team had been on standby at Brize Norton RAF base in Oxfordshire. It is due to land in Ahmedabad in the worst-hit region of Gujarat after an 11-hour flight. The rescuers include fire service and civil defence personnel & are taking heat-seeking equipment to detect people trapped in rubble.

AVOID TRAVEL TO ZANZIBAR ` BRITISH GOVT

The Foreign Office is advising Britons to avoid non-essential travel to Zanzibar after violent clashes between police & protesters on the islands. Britons already visiting the popular tourist destination should stay indoors as the situation is "unstable & unpredictable" the Foreign Office said Up to 15 people are reported to have died in clashes over disputed elections Violence has been worst on Pemba the smaller of Zanzibar's two main islands.

15 000 FEARED DEAD IN INDIAN EARTHQUAKE

Almost 15 000 people may have died in yesterday's earthquake in the western Indian state of Gujarat Defence Minister George Fernandes has said. The marshy coastal district of Kutch around the town of Bhuj is thought to contain 13 000 of those who died. Limited communication links to Bhuj have only just been restored. In Pakistan the newspaper Dawn has reported that 15 people were killed & about 108 wounded in the quake.

BUSH SUPPORTS MISSILE DEFENCE SYSTEM

President George W Bush has reaffirmed his commitment to deploying a missile defence system capable of protecting the US & its allies. He stressed the importance of reducing the country's nuclear arsenal. But that had to tally with the US's ability to keep the peace he said. Mr Bush's stance could jeopardise the Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty signed with the former Soviet Union which banned nationwide missile defences.

QUAKE LEAVES OVER 450 CHILDREN TRAPPED

More than 450 children are feared trapped under the rubble of school buildings following the earthquake which hit the Indian state of Gujarat. The worst collapse was in Bhuj where around 400 children had gathered to celebrate India's Republic Day. A school in Ahmedabad where 60 children were taking a physics exam collapsed and a third school in Bachao was hit. Most schools & offices had been shut at the time because of Republic Day.

MERCY HEROES FLY TO EARTHQUAKE DISASTER

Volunteers have flown to India from RAF Brize Norton to help with the quake rescue operation. The team from the Grangemouth-based International Rescue Corps has wide experience in disaster zones. Section Leader Rab Barrie says members of the 17-strong party will not know how hard their task will be until they get there. Another member of the mercy squad David Dawson said the rescuers would go to wherever they are needed.

AUSCHWITZ EVENT REMEMBERS THE HOLOCAUST

About 1 000 Auschwitz survivors & relatives of victims have gathered at the former death camp in Poland to mark the 56th anniversary of its liberation. The participants included young Poles and Germans who laid flowers & said prayers at a memorial to the 1.5m people who died in the camp. There were no Jewish people present as it is the Sabbath. The event commemorated Holocaust Day which is also being marked in Britain.
