SCHOOLS INITIATIVE FAILS TO RAISE FUNDS

A Government scheme aimed at improving schools in urban & rural areas with money from the private sector has raised half the funds it had hoped for. The first 25 Education Action Zones undershot their sponsorship target by more than £1.25m in 1999. Several new action zones are now expected to be set up. The Department for Education says they will be offered advice on raising the necessary sponsorship.

The Labour-led Scottish Executive has said that nursing care for people at home or living in residential homes would be made available free of charge. Director-General of Age Concern Gordon Lichman welcomed the Scottish decision But he said Westminster would now have to seriously consider following suit.

MANDELSON LET GOVERNMENT DOWN ` SHORT

International Development Secretary Clare Short has accused Peter Mandelson of letting the Government down. She told BBC Radio 4 that he had quit as Northern Ireland Secretary because "he has got problems with the truth". It was "very sad" that Mr Mandelson had penned "acres of newsprint" since his resignation she said adding that he had also "let himself down". "Peter Mandelson is over " Ms Short told The World This Weekend.

CONDOLENCES POUR IN AFTER INDIA QUAKE

Regional & world leaders have been sending messages of sympathy after an earthquake in India that is thought to have killed more than 1 000 people. Chinese leaders Zhu Rongji & Li Peng sent letters to their Indian opposite numbers. And Pakistani leader Pervez Musharraf said he shared their grief. China & Pakistan have had repeated disputes & confrontations with India. New US President George W Bush also said he was saddened by the quake & offered to send aid if requested.

HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR MAKES PLEA TO YOUNG

A survivor of the Holocaust has urged young Scots to remember the magnitude of the Nazi atrocity & ensure it never happens again. Rabbi Ernest Levy was transported from his Budapest home at the age of 19 to the Auschwitz concentration camp. He will give personal testimony at a Holocaust Memorial Day service at Edinburgh's Usher Hall on Saturday ` the first of its kind in Scotland. Rev Levy is cantor of the Giffnock & Newlands synagogue.

NEW CANCER FIGURES ISSUED BY OFFICIALS

Health officials who have been studying cancer & leukaemia levels in south west Scotland say the area has slightly lower rates than elsewhere. The survey included the Dundrennan area near the Army firing range where depleted uranium shells are tested. Figures suggest cancer cases among the villgers there are similar to other parts of Dumfries & Galloway. The report by the Department of Public Health was called for by members of the regional council.

WOULD-BE STUDENTS FLOCK TO JOIN PRINCE

A record number of would-be students eager to share their college days with Prince William have been flooding St Andrews University with applications. The 18-year-old prince starts a History of Art degree course at the Scottish university in September. Its admissions service has received 9 212 applications for just 1 250 places ` up 44.4% on last year's 6 379. It is understood they are from an equal number of men & women.

HOLOCAUST CEREMONIES CENTRE ON CAPITAL

The capital was chosen as the focus for the nation's commemoration of Britain's first Holocaust Day. A small crowd watched the release of 600 blue balloons at the west end of Princes Street Gardens. Each bore a message from some of the schoolchildren who have been visiting the Anne Frank Exhibition in Edinburgh. Later First Minister Henry McLeish & Scottish Secretary Helen Liddle were taking part in a special ceremony at the Usher Hall.

ELDERLY CARE PLANS IN "TOTAL CONFUSION"

The Scottish Executive has been accused of leaving its intentions for care for the elderly in complete confusion. Yesterday the Executive appeared to make a U-turn promising to bring in free personal care for all. The SNP called the statement a con trick and Tory health spokeswoman Mary Scanlon also criticised the move. She said: "This is a delaying tactic which has been acknowledged by Alzheimer's Scotland and care of the elderly is in total confusion."

CASH BOOST FOR SCOTLAND'S RYDER CUP BID

Scotland's bid to host the 2009 Ryder Cup has won a £750 000 boost from the Scottish Executive & Bank of Scotland First Minister Henry McLeish said they were investing the cash on three top European Tour & Scottish PGA events. And he said the move was "great news for Scotland's Ryder Cup bid & great news for Scottish golf". The aim is to raise Scotland's profile and influence the Ryder Cup committee by attracting the world's best players to the events this year.

UK BUSINESS CHIEF WARNS OF RECESSION

The chairman of one of the UK's biggest companies fears the world is in danger of talking itself into global recession Sir Martin Laing of John Laing Construction spoke at the annual gathering of government ministers & leading international companies. The World Economic Forum is meeting in the Swiss ski resort of Davos. Sir Martin spoke after news of a slow- down in the US economy. The dollar/euro relationship is to be discussed today.

FIRST MEMORIAL DAY TO MARK HOLOCAUST

Political & religious leaders are to attend a service to mark Britain's first Holocaust Memorial Day. It is being held exactly 56 years after Allied troops liberated the Auschwitz Nazi death camp at the end of WWII. Memorial days are also being marked in Germany Italy & Sweden. Tonight's service of remembrance is taking place at Methodist Central Hall in Westminster. It will be attended by survivors of the Holocaust.
